Re: My Kuro Project
Thanks. The one advantage of lockdown is the amount of free time I've had to spend on the car.
Next on the list is get to the bottom of the jerking that the car does pretty much all the time. Feels like the drivetrain is moving independently of the body, which makes it frustrating to drive at lower speeds. I've fitted some different engine mounts but nothing changed, so maybe the diff mounts have had it. AFAIK, it's only the engine and diff mounts that attach the PPF to the car, so fingers crossed they will fix it!

Re: My Kuro Project
So, today was the Biggie - the dreaded compression test!
Car was booked in to RotaryMotion for a good look over and compression test this morning. Very friendly chap, who had the car for around an hour, gave it a good going over and took it for a test drive to see how she's doing. He commented how clean the car was compared to most seen these days, and how new it still felt to drive, which was good to hear.
Just for some context with regard to the compression - I've had the car since February, and have pre-mixed since then. The car runs 10w40 oil now, but looks to been ran on 5w30 all its life, with fully synthetic (!) being used for certainly the last few years of its life. It has new a new battery, coils, leads, plugs and a sports cat as seen earlier in this thread. It's at 86,500 miles, has no history of a rebuild, and was sufficiently warmed up due to the 130 mile drive to get there!
The figures:
Front Rotor: 5.4 - 5.5 - 5.7 @ 251rpm
Rear Rotor: 5.7 - 5.3 - 5.5 @248rpm
This is kind of what I was expecting, given the current mileage, and the low usage the car has had over the last couple of years. Glad the numbers are pretty even though.
What are your thoughts? Does this look about right?

Re: My Kuro Project
low but still serviceable.
start saving for a rebuild. 10 or 15k miles i reckon left in that engine, realistically.

Re: My Kuro Project
It's possible that it's been driven too gently for a while and that, in combination with the synthetic oil, has resulted in carbon build-up internally.
How many miles since you bought it?
Have you had a chance to give it an "Italian Decoke" a few times?

Re: My Kuro Project
I've only done around 1500 miles since I've had it as it's a second car. I run it to the beep when I can, but haven't had a chance to really give it some stick and blow out the cobwebs, so I'm sure that will help at least a little bit when I'm able to, although I don't expect it do work miracles.

Re: My Kuro Project
Well it's unfortunate, but already the time has come for this RX-8 to go to a new home. I've gotten all sensible, and have decided to sell both my cars and get one nearly new one, as I don't do anywhere near enough mileage to justify running two cars anymore.
I will miss the car, as it's a great drive on an open road, it just doesn't suit the kind of driving I do these days. At least I've managed to rescue this one enough to keep it on the road for a while longer yet.
If anyone is interested in the car, feel free to send me a PM, but the car will be going in as P/X next Thursday if not.
I'm not leaving Mazda though, as the replacement is a 2019 Mazda 6 2.5, so looking forward to trying something else from the brand. I will definitely stick around here if you'll have me, as it's nice to be part of a friendly community.

Re: My Kuro Project
I'd be interested to see how you find the 2.5 L engine. I have a 2.0L Petrol CX-5 as the family car and I would love to see that engine in there, like they have in the states.
The CX-5 sometimes frustrates with its lack of power, so I'm hoping one day the engine from the 6 finds its way to this model. That would make me consider upgrading it for sure.
Thanks!

Re: My Kuro Project
Sad to see the car moved on, but these things happen and obviously you're welcome as a member even without the 8. There are loads of people on here who don't have an 8 any more but still stick around (and if you get the itch again you know where to ask to find another...)

Re: My Kuro Project
Well she's gone. She threw a check engine light half way on the journey to be traded in (in true rebellious RX-8 fashion - it was for the SSV solenoid), but luckily I had my Bluetooth OBD scanner in the car to reset it, and it stayed off. Managed to get into the 300 mile club on the journey to the dealership too, with fuel to spare! Hopefully someone will find her and carry on the work I had started to keep it on the road.
As I'm no longer an RX-8 owner, I'll start a thread in The Other Car section for the new machine, but for now I shall end this thread with a picture of it.
