RR54 SC Track Project

Post by ChrisHolmes » Sun Mar 29, 2020 1:12 pm

In the early hours of Sunday 1st March Nigel and I were exchanging texts with Ranjan in New York about his troubled car and the outcome was that he generously gave the car to me!

RR54 is standard aside from a rebuilt bridgeported engine with possible issues, full Safety devices cage, Racing Beat ARBs, Evolve seats, Mazdaspeed side skirts, PZ rear spoiler, short shifter and Royale steering wheel.

T200 is a totally different affair having been built over the years by Tony into the ultimate show car but with some quality performance mods topped by a Pettit supercharger. Since acquiring T200 I have fitted a rebuilt street ported and balanced engine with a SOHN, RRP ignition coils, White Line ARBs, TEIN EDFC system, bucket seats, 4 point harnesses as my intention was to track the car which I have done and it is great fun with the extra torque.

So what do I do with two RX8s is the dilema that I was faced with and now having decided what to do I am in the process of transferring the bucket seats, harnesses, TEIN suspension system, Racing Brake 4 pots and 2 piece discs from T200 over to RR54 which will be staying NA.

So eventually T200 will be up for sale as running car, I will not be removing the SC setup to sell it separately before anyone asks.

T200 is currently SORN and will remain so until the current crisis is over, both factors of course mean viewings and test drives are not possible. Rather than clutter up this project thread with questions please be patient until T200 is actually advertised in the For Sale section with it’s revised specification
.

Total change of plans during April and now having discovered the supercharger has a whirring bearing I am going to have it overhauled and it will see service again in RR54 probably in 2021.

Future plans include in no particular order:

Tomorrow will be a test of my ingenuity to remove the pistons from the 4 pots, a couple were stiffer than others so no doubt the cause of the uneven pad wear. Racing Brake have confirmed this is the likely cause of the uneven wear.
I don’t have compressed air but I do have a MIG gas bottle of Argon/CO2 so plan to make up a connection with a section of old brake pipe.

If your going to use bottled gas, keep your hands out of the way of the pistons, normal airlines work at around 80-120 psi and can apply a lot of force to the pistons, bottled gas can be significantly higher. But you probably already know this

Thanks, always worth giving someone the nod just in case. Braided lines arrived today so making up a feed line will be simpler. Various thickness pieces of timber planned as “stoppers” for progressive, hopefully, pushing out of the pistons.

Project thread with no pictures? Tut tut Chris.

So do you prefer more of a raw n/a rx8 as a track car over the f/I? Or is it a case of the simplicity?

I get asked a lot about my old type r and to of why I drive that most out of all my cars, my reply is always the same, its so simple compared to cars of "today" in ref to being loaded with so much electrical technology etc that just one simple sensor or lose wire can leave it stuck at the side of the road and poss cost thousands.

Had some camera issues which are hopefully resolved and some photos should be arriving soon.

You hit the nail on the head with the simplicity comment and whilst the torque is nice to have the car overall is not really what I have realised I want in on RX8. After transfering the brakes and suspension etc; over T200 will go up for sale complete with the SC set up from inlet to exhaust tips.

Videos of my caliper piston removal jig in action. No sound unfortunately so you will need to imagine the POP in the last video.

Refurbed Calipers fitted and swapped over the 2 piece Racing Brake Discs, Racing Beat drop links and TEINs from T200 which now has the suspension from RR54 plus newly painted orange front calipers and RR54s blue stuff and yellow stuff EBC pads.
Cannot complete the front brakes until the correct seals and pad retainer arrives from USA.

The cause of the sticking was I am certain down to the aluminium corrosion behind the dust seals force the seal against the piston. I couldn't see anything else that could be causing the restriction.

Piston seals and retainer arrived yesterday so assembled the calipers and fitted them today. Brake bleeding was going well with a nice even movement of the pedal with reasonable resistance until I did one extra push and discovered i had drained the master cylinder and pumped a load of air in! Packed everything up and went indoors.

get a syringe and fill with brake fluid, open the nipple of the caliper you where last working on and attach syringe, push fluid into circuit until level is visible in res.

youll save yourself hours of bleeding doing that. :)

exactly that. reverse bleeding has saved my ass more times than i can count,

youll still need to re bleed the master first though (if it has a nipple.)

Fitted the new caliper seals and the pistons slide so freely. All fitted now along with new pistons and seals in the rear calipers, braided lines front and rear. New Mintex 1144 pads in the front replacing the wedges I took out!
Bled the brakes today with assistance from Kathy and Steve.
Removed the manky sound proofing from the engine bay and fitted the RRP COFS tanks that I bought from Scartlead. The headlamp washers dont work so need to do some investigation, plus the low level light is on. Had to extend the wiring for the H/lamp washer motor and make up 10mm "stud" for right hand plate mounting screw, otherwise simples.
Engine mounts tomorrow.

Eke trucks are not my strong point but today I threw caution to the wind and have swapped the Taiwan? LED rear lights from T200 over to RR54 and only the small red corner lights work! The front indicators flash at normal speed but there is nothing at the rear.
As the original boot loom had a trailer socket relay spliced into it I removed all the wires relating to that and the associated relays. Whilst doing this I had both boot looms side by side and work through each connection and cable labelling them as I went.
I have one black with red line wire that runs to the stop tail and reversing light which I think is an earth but I don’t know. Also the right side of the loom has three wires which don’t match with the three spare ins on the left side. I traced where they went on each side and connected them together as stop tail and reversing, I think.
Result, no lights at all except for the small red side lights on the corners!!
Fast forward 2 1/2 hours and I now have lights, I reverted to plain old bulbs for the reverse and indicator lights, changed how the indicators were wired and bingo it all works.
Very very relieved to say the least.
