That's properly brilliant, what's it like to drive compared to before the transplant? I love the RX5 badge too, nice touch.
Galaxy Grey PZ number 24.

The original 1.8 mzr engine was atrocious. Incredibly slow and a very unresponsive throttle which didn't match your input.

The rotary engine in comparison is an animal

Re: Paul's MX-5 NC with a 231 heart

Post by Paul_13 » Wed Jul 31, 2019 7:15 am

The worst thing on the conversion was the wiring. Lots of it. Trying to figure out what "5door" rx8 bits I needed to adapt.
I relocated the rx8 abs pump as I wanted to retain the dsc which involved extending the loom over to the other side of the engine bay.
All of mx5 interior electrics work including fan etc.
Had to swap in the rx8 clocks, and figure out how to extinguish the air bag light and other lights which weren't controlled through the ecu.
Fuel gauge is roughly accurate, rx8 uses 2 senders, however mx5 only uses 1. I joined the 2 "feed" wires and used a common ground which seemed to of done the trick.
Also had to convert auto leveling head lights to manual, an easy job once you get your head around the wiring diagram.
Luckily the mx5 nc and rx8 are very similar in wiring layouts

Thanks, Stu

The front rx8 subframe swapped straight over inc steering rack etc. same chassis mounting points. Radiator mounts are the same. Front chassis cross member is the same. Whole front suspension setup is the same.

The only issue I had was the gearstick hole is slightly further forward on the MX5 compared to the rx8 and I had to modify the engine mounts slightly to allow the engine to sit 15mm ish further forward.

I also had to make an adapter plate to mount the top of the PPF to the gearbox. Top bolt holes didn't line up but the bottom did strangely. I did this to retain the MX5 PPF and Diff. Had to swap propshaft end over. exhaust was roughly the same route also, currently using mx5 exhaust which is too small of a diameter

Is it possible to fit the RX-8 diff, without lots of re-engineering?
The ratio might be better, depending what size wheels/tyres you're running.
The RX-8 diff is an LSD "Supadiff" but only some special edition MX5's got lsd IIRC.

Are you running the steel MX5 propshaft?
The RX-8 propshaft is carbonfibre

Edit ***RX8 Subframe is different to MX5***. However you have to cut and shut the PPF. One thing I didn't want to do.

Yes running MX5 propshaft. RX8 one was too long

All this just confirms my long held suspicions about the RX-8 being predominantly an NC MX-5 with a few extra bits in the middle :-# . So much straight swapping!

Obviously the rotary powerplant and the MX-5 were destined to be together. Any power increase for MX-5's is always a hoot and I'm really looking forward to seeing this one progress!

RX8 by the looks of it!

https://www.google.com/search?q=mazda+i ... e&ie=UTF-8

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Ibuki

The Mazda Ibuki (マツダ・息吹 Matsuda Ibuki) was a concept car by Mazda revealed at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show[1][3][4] and the 2004 Chicago Auto Show.[2][5][6] It became the design basis for the third generation Mazda MX-5 (NC).[5]

The Ibuki, which is Japanese for "breathing new energy" or "adding vigor",[1] was built on a variation of the Mazda RX-8's platform.

Next job on the list is to refit a 6 speed box and then look at fabricating an exhaust as i can't find a reasonably priced NC exhaust system.

Looking at getting this and cutting the smaller bore pipework off:

Then use this universal back box

Yes, literally un bolt the rear subframe and bolt the RX8 one in it's place. straight swap. However you have to cut and shut the PPF. One thing I didn't want to do.

Yes running MX5 propshaft. RX8 one was too long
The rear subframes are unfortunately slightly different.
The MX5 has no bushes on the rear mounts and is hard mounted. So the chassis bolts are not long enough for the RX8 bushed connections.

All of the suspension arms are identical, so I've mounted the RX8 diff in the MX5 subframe, and used RX8 hubs and driveshafts.
I haven't come across any need to adjust the sub frame itself, I just used the RX8 diff mount and it sits in OK so far.

Good to know. I just made an educated guess comparing the two on the car.

Box on. Just got to bolt it back together
Bad news is I checked the rear diff ratio. I was lead to believe it was a 4.1, however it's 3.7/3.9
Would explain the bogging under accelation /great change and the ridiculous mph in 1st and 2nd gear with the 5 speed box.

Side note, this is a properly nice job, from what I saw of Paul's work when I dropped the box off it's going to be special when it's back on the road. Sorry for being a muppet and leaving my tarp behind, at least you've got most of the oil that escaped from the box on the journey!
