I think it's looking pretty up together guys, properrr job!

Image

(That's actually probably got less rust than mine...)

Okay, fine, I'll try and get some good photos next time it's not absolutely tipping it down and it's actually light outside, but here are the ones the mechanic showed me from mid-job. I've spoilered for the queasy amongst you. They're potato quality as they're photographs of his phone screen.
Spoiler:

Image
Apparently whilst doing the work the guy said it took longer because of the Waxoyl (my work, he understood and didn't complain) and the Expanding Foam that had been put in the cavity at some point. Apparently they first noticed it was there when it caught fire slightly... (No, there are no scorch marks, don't worry).

Honestly, if I could get hold of the previous owner...

The terrifying thing is it sounds like a 'me' bodge...

Let this be a salutary lesson to everyone that rust proofing is VERY important.

How convenient Krown up in Brum have a nice RX8OC discount arranged by the newly greened ChrisHolmes. (Guess where I am planning to go soon...)

Also, don't buy a rusty 8 like I did. For your own sakes...

It's held it together this long... ImageImageImage

Glad it's sorted for you now (and the brakes didn't get flagged again)

Looking forward to pics of the repair Image

It makes me a bit worried about what could be lurking under my car... I know everything visible is not rusty... but the box sections worry me a bit!

I haven't actually got a chance to take photos of the repair yet, mostly because it's quite a good job and unless you're really looking (or pull back the arch liners) you can't obviously tell.

One of the final pieces of the P-Shed puzzle is nearly in place as well thanks to a trip to see Scotty PZ. (I did 85 miles on a quarter of a tank, quite to my surprise  )

Image

(Bloody hell but it's heavy, people weren't joking...)

Couple of things yet to fall into place, but...

M25/M3 in 5th/6th with very little acceleration and stretches of 50-70. It was the first quarter, which I have found to be the generous one.

I also appear to have an engine that went together right (or has something wrong, other side of the coin...) as my MPG in general is around the 20-25 range, even when I'm booting it it's rarely done below 18.

Nice to meet you and your misses pal, the backbox should come up lovely with a good scrub.
You clearly have the most economical RX8 ever as I don't get better than 180 miles to a full tank!

Top Tip: There's a lever thingy next to the gear stick and some people have reported that dropping it to a more horizontal position has helped their fuel economy YMMV ;)

Oh, that's the fuel economy lever, I wondered what that was there for and why it had a weird handle on it.

Yes it's upside down (software fix)), yes it could be neater at the bottom of the screen, but I'm happy with that for the moment.

And Mrs H said I could work on it as we don't do anything for Valentine's anyway (unnecessary commercialised nonsense). There's one of the reasons amongst many why I'm marrying her...

Been quite quiet for the last couple of weeks as the 8 has just been plodding along, doing sterling service shuttling me back and forth as my daily.

I did treat her to a quick clean (45m as opposed to my usual 2-4 hour spruce because it's still winter and it's just going to get filthy again) last weekend as it was absolutely disgusting, and was pleasantly surprised to find my wax from last year is still holding up! Shockingly, it actually DOES last 6 months. Not the best photo, but it's still beading like a champ. +1 to Meguiars Ultimate Liquid Wax.

Image

I've also partly resolved my Australian display issue for the dash by using the SSD_13XX libraries (turns out Adafruit never bothered to make the rotate screen function work properly for SSD_1331... There's about 6 hours of my life I'll never get back, thanks guys #-o ), but I'm now experiencing some weird screen corruption I wasn't before that I think is down to some ground/voltage thing on the board, so that's a new fresh hell to fight.

In more mechanical news I have a day on the ramp in Oxford booked in a couple of weekends time to get me fancy 'new' exhaust and decat on in time for some good weather (I live in hope). I also need to investigate an odd rattle/bump I'm sometimes hearing from driver's front wheelwell as well (it only happens on certain sections of road, and everything vital seems secure :-k ), and will probably change my gearbox oil while I'm at it as the thing is rattling up a storm in certain gears, and on long journeys it's driving me slightly insane, especially as my driver's amp/speaker is still a tad fooked.

Speaking of, the weird bassy rattle/buzz that I'm getting appears to only happen to it in certain circumstances, and if I turn the electrics off and on again it will disappear. Makes me think it's a loose electrical ground or an amp issue, but troubleshooting that means removing door cards etc., so is reserved for drier weather, when I'm planning on swapping out the head unit to fit a Grom and finally fitting my prototype dash anyway.

Does anyone/has anyone recreated the gauge fascia plates in the past? I don't mind cutting them up, but it'd be a lot neater if I could get the central rev gauge plate remade 'to spec' so it all looks neat and tidy. Never know if someone in here might be a magical CNC wizard, and I'd never know if I didn't ask.

Next month (13th March) is our my 1 year anniversary with the car (READ: time to renew insurance and tax :pale:) , so nothing special planned as with the Vectra off the road (and therefore my 8 mileage doubling) and wedding payments all done I can't afford to take it out anywhere nice.

85.5k miles and counting...

If you want a hand at the ramp you have my number!

Frustrating about the library being broken. I know for the HU LCD you have to have a 46ms wait time between writing to the onboard chip. Might be an avenue to investigate with the new issues your seeing.

BRB looking outside for four horse riders...

I found the wax I put on last year didn't last a very long time at all which was disappointing! Was an autoglym product if memory serves and not a cheap one! (Not that I paid for it but still). Its finish was nice enough but it definitely didn't last more than 2-3 months sadly. Could have been my wash routine wasn't friendly towards it but that seems unlikely.

Don't be so surprised if one of the products you use didn't work well with the wax. When I had my Zed the detailer I used asked which products I was using for my maintenance washes, that way he picked the sealer which lasted between the details. I then changed snow foam and the wax he used didn't last the full 4 months.
