if you knew me, youd know i make crappy decisions when buying cars. today is no exception, i just bought a rx8 with a suspect engine

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-RX8-spa ... 1999103953?

it has 2 spare alloys and tyres, a rough as rats front bumper, a coolant leak and it doesnt start.

oh and the last project car i bought, i blew up, twice.

so here we go, ill have it running soon, maybe

got a chance to poke round the rx8 today.

its definatly flooded, so optimistically i went through the deflood procedure 5 times with the pump fuse out, then tried to start it, no dice. so i pulled the plugs, soaking wet, i then spark tested all the coils, one ht lead has a weak clip, one coil doesnt spark at all and one sparks intermittantly, the other two have a nice strong spark, having taken them off the bottoms of all the coils have discoloured in the middle, so a new set of coils it is.

has anyone else bought from this seller?

That seems very cheap for genuine coils.

You may be lucky, and they'll last your ownership of the car ... or in 6 weeks time you may have a dead engine (or anything in between those two extremes).

Unfortunately the RX8 is very ignition sensitive and anything less than coils from a known & trusted seller is a gamble.

Only you can answer if it's a gamble worth taking. Me personally, I'd not risk it. :)

:whathesaid: and :whathesaid: That is getting on for half price from traders we know sell only the genuine article. They do say they are the genuine thing and no fakes, I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve that claim other than wondering how they can achieve that price. For comparison this is one of the best suppliers and their prices http://www.mazdarotaryparts.com/brx8-ge ... -311-c.asp

The old saying "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is" applies here I'd say.

well there's a few ways of looking at this.

1 hes a recognised importer of parts from japan and has sold a large number of kits with only 2 neg feedback, and those weren't for the quality of the part

2 they are being shipped from japan.

3 ebay is very good at protecting the buyer and if they're fake ill get the money back.

so ive bought them, if the ones on here i mentioned earlier are still available ill buy those too, and if these turn out to be fake ill send them back, if they're genuine ill fit them and resell the used ones on here.

Um, it's not about whether or not you get your money back. It's about if they're fake there's a decent chance it'll destroy your engine. And you definitely won't get the £3,000 rebuild cost back from ebay.

I'm with vian on this have fell some time back into fake coils myself ended up new engine/ cat so on
Not saying there fake not for a minute but why why for the saving if what 140 quid would you want to risk it makes no sense and people don't always leave negative feedback on ebay that's for sure example
Buy coils fit on car at first rums fine go on ebay leave positive feedback happy with purchase or whatever,3 or 400 miles later coils fail maybe screw engine up can't retract feedback from eBay so the fact there not much negative feedback there means absolutely nothing
But as I said and others have to no one is suggesting there not genuine and of course your choice to make hopefully if u have purchased them.there are good maybe put pic up people can take alook

well as i say, i have the advantage of having people around me that verify genuine parts for a living. so it wont be hard for me to know if theyre ok or not, and if there is any doubt at all, back they go...

They are genuine coils from JDM planet. You just have to wait for delivery and pay the duty from Japan. So £150 isn't the full price.

well when i bought this car i as always aware that itd probably be wanting a new engine.
my compression tester arrived today (at last!)

and it does.

rear bank
4 bar 3.8bar 6bar

front bank
0bar 0bar 2bar.

bear in mind im doing this cold and with this method...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlaWFwcSq3A

then the results aren't exactly 100% accurate, but they dont need to be. that front rotors apex seals are goosed and the rear ones arent too good either.

i doubt it will ever start like this.

I'm not sure about compression tests not using a rotary compression tester, but that really does sound like it is kaput. You'll be making some use of the workshop manuals etc before long I'd guess. :study:

you can only get a rough idea, its not ideal, but you watch the needle bounce and each bounce should be an even time from the last, i was getting 1 bounce in the time i should have been getting 3 :( definitely f***ed.

The chuffs on turnover give a pretty reasonable idea too. If they're uneven like that, not good.

Your post title says it all #-o .. if you believe buying arguably the most important part for the RX8 from eBay and at that stupid price too, then you are stupid :(

coils hit customs yesterday total customs cost £13.11 which is much less than i thought it would be considering £8 of that is royal mails handling fee so thats £5.11 duty.

so (if these coils turn out to be kosher and considering they are coming from japan, from a well known (in japan) distributor and for about the right price (if you add 20%vat and the correct import duty on top the price is about the same as you pay here) its looking promising.

so all ive got to do now is give them a good lookover myself, and then pass them on to the verification dept at work to have a good prod round and stick them on the electrical testing rig with a genuine revc coil next to them(ive managed to cadge one of a mates spares he bought from a mazda dealer) if the come out as genuine they will be going on the car (WHEN ive got a new engine lol) if they have ANY doubt, back to japan they go...

im doing this for you guys, if they turn out to be kosher, other people will have a source of genuine revc coils for about 60% of the cost youd expect.

Just for reference, just because your mate bought his coils from a Mazda dealer that doesn't guarantee they are genuine. I understand some dealers have (perhaps unknowongly) supplied fakes....

so the boys have had my coils since yesterday and their verdict is....

genuine!

the stress test gives identical results on the scope, and all the markings etc are exactly as they should be. so either the dealer coil is fake (statistically improbable) or i have a very good value set of genuine coils.

You did very well on the duty charge. What was the final total price, if you don't mind revealing it?

JDMPlanet have been kosher from day one. Caution on ebay is sensible, of course, but the over zealous and slightly patronising "warnings" about the evils of eBay get a little tiresome.
