DOC787B - The VelociBraptor!

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

Right, so, as I seem to be collecting RX8s and amalgamating them in to one super-red-beasty, I figured I may as well start a project thread... Bit late and all that, but hey ho.

I'll put in some details and basics today and will try to update bits and pieces as and when they happen.

So, some of you may have seen (or heard from miles away) my Diamond Grey Beast:
Super-sexy-funtimes
Super-sexy-funtimes
I've owned her since May 2016 and she's had various amusing outings, including a Modern Classics Magazine photoshoot, a shoot for Classic Car Mart and also numerous track outings where she produced some wonderfull flameage:
FIRE!
FIRE!
Flameo.PNG (772.06 KiB) Viewed 4811 times
I bought her stock, but with a knackered diff, so that signalled a trip over to Ben at RR with the help of Nutty sourcing me a replacement diff. Once out the way the fun modifications started. She was transplanted with my bronze R3 wheels from my previous RX, the re-trimmed R3 wheel went across too. After that followed a toyo decat replacement as mine developed a wonderful split in it...
Sad Toyo
Sad Toyo
Then I turned my attention to the ever-so-quiet OEM catback... Going from one extreme to another I went straight over the deep end and fitted a shiny new Cobra catback  sadly, nobody at CobraSport advised me that it didn't fit directly on to the R3...
Huzzah! - wait...
Huzzah! - wait...
So a trip up to CobraSport in Sheffield, ready to have an argument over their website saying it fitted, ended with a very helpful bunch of people putting the issue right, and refunding me my fuel money for so doing - Can't praise them enough for their services!
That's what I'm talking about
That's what I'm talking about
So... A few other mods and bits and pieces and she ended up looking like this mad beasty.
The final track day for the grey beasty :(
The final track day for the grey beasty :(
Not to everyone's tastes, for sure, but I like the way she ended up :) Getting things set for the full 787B Plastidip and I stumble across Matt Wall's thread about his VR R3... A PM and a call later, and this beautiful piece of machinery is now RX8 #5 and RX8 R3 #3 for me :D Engine has, I believe, got a blown side seal which is allowing the gasses to pressurise the sump... Fun times.
RED BEASTY!
RED BEASTY!
The plan is to assimilate all the shiniest and bestest bits in to one FRANKENREX which will reside in the red bodywork. Whatever is left is to be sold for bits and pieces with the final chassis to be a practice bed for a convertible or ute conversion - A different thread will happen for that fun experiment :D

please no buying requests from the breaker in this thread

For those who know the car, it has some very nice bits on it already, including a pettit racing hi flow cat and catback, axial flow short shifter and pettit lightweight flywheel, so there's some difficult decisions ahead to decide which bits I want to keep in the finished product!

More posts to come as I have a proper play around - and one final outing for the DG Beasty at Simply Japanese on the 30th of July :D It'll be a nice final sendoff for her I think.

Thanks for reading :thumleft:

Nowt wrong with it, but the chassis and bodywork is better on the vr, but has a knackered engine.

Engine from grey, in to red and hey presto!

Why not rebuild reds engine with a taste full bridge? She'd be the first R3 with a FB AFAIK..... food for thought dude, you could maybe sell the other engine to part fund it?

The rebuild would be 2.5k and there's already a couple of FB R3s I think?

Did consider it, but the DG is worth much more in bits :-(

Nothing too earth-shattering this weekend, removed the R3 wheels and put the BBS in their place as the R3s are being picked up this evening.

I actually don't mind the gold and red look...!

As pointed out by Goobie I hadn't updated this in a while with the news that FRANKENREX LIVES!

Picked her up from Nutty Tuesday night and she is running sweet again! Sadly the lightweight flywheel on the dead engine appears to have been torqued up by some super-human nutter as it porked Nutty's socket rather than undoing it... So whilst I wait for that to turn up I'm pootling around as it was in the grey.

Full write up, pics and hopefully a good wash for it on Saturday I think, but just to say that an R3 running an OEM cat and OEM catback is eerily quiet... I don't like it!

GIVE ME BACK MY FIAAAR!

Been a little while since I've posted anything, and that's mainly because not much has happened!

Spent most of the time dismantling the Grey one and stocking my garage full of the bits to be transferred over to FrankenREX. The main additions in the mean time are that the engine is in and running sweet and smooth, and I've migrated over the steering wheel from the grey that was re-trimmed by Royal Steering wheels.

That is still, hands down, the BEST mod I have had done to my car ever. £155 I think I paid and it just feels so much nicer than the stock thin thing...

Also added this bad boy this morning:

Nice chunky update for people! Over the bank holiday weekend I set to work (with the help of a couple of spanner-monkey mates) to transfer over the few bits from the DG that I still had to migrate, including, but not limited to:

- Cobra Zorst
- Toyo Decat
- Bronze R3 wheels
- 20mm Spacers
- Flat Bottom Steering wheel
- 4 pot calipers and new(ish) front discs
- Gulf RF1000 Brake Fluid
- Painted Rear Calipers (red to match fronts)

No pictures for you all you pictophiles, but will ensure I get it cleaned and then some pictures up and posted!

Still to do to get it back to where I want it (for now!):

- Spirit R style headlights (hopefully these will look badass against the red paintwork!)
- 'MAZDA' Brake Caliper Decals
- Rear 15mm Spacers
- PZ Alloys with new NS2R tyres
- Lightweight Flywheel
- New Windscreen - to be fitted tomorrow following a wonderful crack
- GT86 Rear View Mirror - to be fitted with the window-screen :D

Pictures will follow shortly, I promise!

Certainly a busy weekend, though still invariably have a lot left to do. Have to say, though, the 4 pot brakes are fantastic - but with some braided hoses attached they're even betterer!

Test fitting of the new wheels last night. Still need tyres that aren't shiny (!) fitting to them, but I think they look phenomenal against the red with the big brakes peeking out from behind them!
DSC_0027.JPG
Sadly I now need to decide whether I drill the wheel or cut the studs...

Opinions on a post card please?

which one were you jumping? Frankie or the PZ?
I do like the PZ wheels, not quite as much as the R3 wheels, but at least the rubber should be cheaper!
Does this mean you're going to be breaking the PZ for the next few months now?
(I'd say cut the studs, but I don't have a postcard to send!)

Jumping the PZ. It'd been sat for ~10 months so the battery is buggered. Wanted to test the engine properly before it is picked up on Saturday by it's new custodian :D

I'm having the fun bits off it (wheels, mirrors, spoiler etc.) and then the rest is going to a new home.

I still also prefer the R3 wheels, but for track work they aren't the best and the tyre prices are crippling. So the NS2Rs will be going on the PZ alloys and my R3 wheels will remain on the car for the daily stuff.

I may well cut the studs as I can see me buggering up the drilling of the wheel... I also don't have a 14mm drill bit...

I figured it would ultimately be cheaper to replace borked studs than mangled wheels, on the assumption that it'll go wrong at least once - or at least it will if I was doing it!
Are you putting wheels on the pz before it goes to the new keeper? If so, what? (out of sheer nosiness)
