So if I bridge that gap the fuel pump just runs flat out as soon as ignition is on?

I've been meaning to chip in on this pending the video upload, and was going to bring you a spare fuel pump speed control relay and resistor to try. However watching that, it seems to be really struggling to crank - have you watched the RPM with an OBD reader? The motor should reach cranking RPM almost straight away but yours seems to take a while to get going.

I did a while ago but now my obd reader is not working properly and loses it's connection after a few seconds so is pretty useless. I should probably get a new one and check, starter definitely is faster than the old one and starts a bit easier now but still always slow from cold.

I can't find my special fuel pump resistor bypass connector but Casey's relay bridge is just as good :thumleft: I do have the two relays though. Let me know if you're working tomorrow and I'll drop them in along with an OBD reader :)

Is yours due a pump recall by any chance?

Pardon my ignorance but the empty slot in the engine bay fuse box (passenger side and somewhere towards the back) with 2 exposed pins in it - connecting these two together does the same thing as jumping the relay doesn't it?

Sticking a screwdriver in there certainly excites the fuel pump somewhat anyway.

It certainly activates the pump regardless of ES rotationings, but does it switch the speed control relay to run it at full kipper? [furious electrical diagram pdf scrolling noises....]

edit: no, bridging the check connector energises the fuel pump relay only, which runs the pump through the resistor at low speed :thumleft:

I keep going back to that video and my gut feeling is it's an electrical supply problem, that starter just sounds so lazy :-k

Should be more like this:

It's certainly due some recalls anyway. I swapped the starter relay with one of the others before and didn't make a difference.
I'll try bridging the fuel pump one and see it it helps, I've suspected some kind of power issue but tried multiple, batteries, battery terminals, adding a jump pack, cleaning the earth wire etc so at a bit of a loss of what's going on.

I'm thinking of the +12v connector to the starter (it can get corroded) but no harm in ruling out the fuel system first. When you first turn the ignition key to ACC the pump will run for one second. In a quiet place you should be able to hear a positive whir as it does so, might be worth listening out for.

Thanks for dropping off the stuff today Phil. I gave the obd reader a go after work and with the acccelator fully down it cranks at 225-250rpm. I'll try it again in the morning when it's colder and see what it says then try swapping the relays. I did clean the ends of the wires when I changed the starter motor as they were off and didn't seem that bad anyway.

I did get quite a bit of oil over a fair bit of the engine bay when I changed the oil cooler lines as they had a fair amount in them despite my efforts to drain them all so possibly I have caused an issue then? As it was around that time I started having problems...

Or maybe when the battery started to fail and was changed 🤔 been a while can't remember now

Oh damn you're in Newport?!

Literally there yesterday/today and could have said hi / had a prod.

Just as an FYI, my car cranks at 220rpm (maybe even slower when it only has the race battery on) and starts just fine on an 8k street port motor.

Yeah I am, wouldn't have wanted to make you stay in Newport any longer than necessary

Also it's hard to test things as need to be left a good few hours to cool down fully to test if anything made a difference

My engine used to take a while to start when cold with the original (2004) starter.
It never failed but it wasn't very reassuring as, even with a fully charged battery, it was only turning at 180-190rpm.

By comparison, the starter I got from MRP in 2010 will spin her at 310rpm cold and 340rpm hot.
She recorded over 350rpm doing a compression test but then the non-testing rotor had a plug removed, so only half the compression resistance.

Swapped the relays over to the ones Phil lent me yesterday but car was not started since Saturday and it fires up almost straight away this morning! Will reserve judgment after a few more cold starts but looks like it might have fixed it

It's not 100% fixed :(

Started straight away yesterday but today was a bit slow again first thing. Then fine 3 or 4 times today when left for anything from 10 minutes to 2 hours. But then when it was left for 5 hours while I was in work it was a bit slow and did a massively loud backfire starting this evening.

It does seem improved but t not fixed, but at least seems it's fuel pump related probably 🤷

I've worked on two 8s with worn fuel pump fuse holders, one was so bad that the fuse was only held in by gravity.

I can only assume that the (previous) owners had been in the habit of flooding the engines and had both seen the youtube vids that show that you have to remove the fuse to clear.

On the first car it was sufficient to "adjust" the contacts with needle-nosed pliers but the worse one I had to solder an in-line fuse holder across the contacts - no pretty but we needed to fix it fast. This immediately cured a random misfire that I had previously been suspecting was down to a failing anti-knock sensor.

Checked all the fuses and nothing loose etc swapped a few around and made no difference. Seems to start better cold with 10-20% throttle for some reason.

Unfortunately it looks like the car is gonna have to go soon whatever happens :(

Starting a new job and buying a house and just won't be able to afford to run it so need another car and most likely won't have space for 3 cars at the new house. So to try and sell it but ultimately it might end up being broken unfortunately... I'll have it a few more months probably though.
