After spending the last 4 months cleaning, checking and collecting parts, I finally started my engine rebuild.

Here's some photos of today's progress.ImageImageImageImageImage

I hope to get the rebuild finished and get the engine in the car tomorrow. I will post more pictures tomorrow night.

Did you have the eshaft measured and checked for wear. I see it still has the stain in the oil groove area therefore has it not been polished?

Nathan replaced the E shaft Chris, the stain in the oil groove is perfectly normal.

The E shaft looks good from what I can see

I did replace the e shaft that originally came of this engine. The e shaft I've used has very little wear.

Do you have to get them polished?

Today's progress:

Got the front end of the engine finished and got the sump on.

Unfortunately I didn't seem to take any pictures between fitting the oil pump and fitting the front cover.

This is as far as I got today:
Image

I have discovered that the plastic bit that distributes air to the oil injectors is broken (picture attached) does anyone have one they could send me?

Does anyone have any tips for when it comes to mating the engine to the gearbox?

I recall the space was tight between the front of the engine and the sub-frame.

So got the engine in the car.

However, I'm struggling to fully close the gap between the engine and gearbox. I'm sure the input shaft is in the clutch disc but the last 15mm seams impossible to close.

Anyone got any tips?

So got my clutch alignment tool and engine slid right on to the gearbox this time.

Here's a photo of the engine in, mounts bolted up and bell housing.
Image

Unfortunately I snapped the rubber section of the clutch line. Must have caught the engine on it. This did however give me an excuse to install a stainless braided hose.

ImageImage

Today I got the harness connected up, upper manifold and oil filler neck fitted as well as the d585 coils and magnacore leads installed.

Image

Then couldn't resist a trial fitting of my racing beat induction kit.

Image

Millers oil and coolant from mx5 parts on order so should be able to get the engine started over the next week.

It's looking good, not long till that tense moment when you turn the key and the engine comes to life.

Got all my service items ordered and delivered on time, so hopefully I will get the engine started this weekend.

Image

Is there anything I can pick up from halfords that I could premix for when I start up? Until I can get a long term solution ordered?

So got everything on the car today.

Alternator fitted, exhaust connected back up and new oil and spark plugs in the engine.

Used tap water as coolant for first start.

Then it came to the moment of truth.....

Fueled car up, checked everything over and connected the battery.

First turn of the key I got a single click...

Left it a moment or two then turned key again.
This time I got a consistent clicking noise that sounded like a relay.

Gave it another few moments and eventually it turned over, but still didn't start and ended with everything going black on the dash followed by the dials going nuts.

Can anyone tell me how to find the problem?

You have a bad ground connection or dead battery by the sound of it. Double check the grounds on the front cross member, on the engine in front of the starter motor, and to the lower intake manifold then finally make sure the battery terminals are tight. Then check the battery is charged and slave it with another and give it another go - you may need to dry the plugs if it turned over for very long.

Today I've went over all the earths, cleaned the spark plugs and fitted the re-charged battery, and now the engine turns over every time.

Still not firing up though.

So I connected my OBD reader and checked the cranking speed.

The starter is only cranking the engine between 210 and 230 Rev's. Could this be the reason for the engine to starting?

It should be enough to get it going, have you actually tested to make your sparking?

Does it sound like it's trying to go or is it just dead? Can you smell fuel?

Haven't noticed a smell of fuel. No haven't tested if its sparking.

How's best to check?

Can you hear the pump when you turn the ignition over? If not check fuses.

Check for bad earths

To check the Sparks you can either get them out and put them near a good earth and watch for a spark while someone else turns over or get spark testers for about £15

Are your fuel injectors connected up the right way round? It's easy to connect the wrong electrical connector to the fuel injector.

I labelled wiring harness when I stripped it off the engine so I'm pretty confident with the injector connections.
