Nathans Rebuilt, Steet Ported, Velocity Red RX8

Post by nnrouty » Mon Jun 29, 2015 7:56 pm

For those of you who didn't read my intro posts, Hi I'm Nathan, an I've recently purchased a 2004 RX8 192ps in velocity red.

The car is struggling to start when hot so once I get my garage (rented) this week I will be starting to strip out the engine ready for a rebuild.

So no doubt I will be on here regularly looking for tips from those of you who have been through a rebuild before.

Once the engine is rebuilt and back in the car, I want to try and make the engine as visible as possible. I'm already planning to relocate the battery to the boot and remove the air con pump so I can mount the alternator on the side of the block.

I've been looking in the engine bay this afternoon and was wondering if any body had ever removed the plastic intake manifold (between the inlet manifold and the throttle body) as this seems to cover most the engine? Ideally I would like to make up a manifold that would bring the throttle body and mass airflow meter over to the drivers side of the engine bay?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Good luck Nathan - and detailing it as you go here with photos will be much appreciated by a lot of people. :thumleft: I'm sure you will get plenty of help, advice and tips from those who have done the same/similar too.

So it's taken a month and a half, but finally I've got my garage sorted.

Tomorrow I'm planning to start stripping out the engine, so I will update you tomorrow night with some photos.

I've been looking at these seals on ebay. The description says that they are Viton seals. I'm assuming that Viton is the manufacturer. Has anyone heard of these or had any experience with them?Image

Viton is the material they're made from. :) they're good seals, that looks like an Atkins rotary kit. If you're doing a rebuild, just buy a full kit, all the seals there will be included.

So this weekend I managed to spend a few hours in the new garage and started to strip the engine bay out.

Then moved on to the air con pump, the upper section of the intake manifold

I'm wanting to start running the cable for the relocation of the battery to the boot.

Does it matter what type of cable I use?

I've been reading a DIY Battery relocation blog on RX8club.com. The guy says to use 2ga cable?

Doing a google search I only seem to be able to find US sellers. Anyone know who in the UK might sell this type of cable?

Does it need to be 2GA?

This weekend I managed to get the engine out of the car ready for strip down.

I removed the centre section of the exhaust, removed the bolts from around the bell housing and unfastened the engine mounts. I must say that bolt to top of the bell housing were particularly difficult to remove.

Image

I had hoped that I might have been able to remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds but a few of the bolts were inaccessible.

So this afternoon I started the engine strip down but unfortunately did get chance to finish, but here are some photos of what I got done today:

This week I had the guys at work make me an adapter for the engine stand
Image

First off I removed the sump which turned out to be in good condition.Image
Image

The I got out the 3/4 socket set and my 6ft of seamless pipe and tackled the flywheel nut. Image

With the flywheel removed I moved onto the pulley nut, again using my 6ft pipe. This proved to be tougher than the flywheel nut. Even the tube was flexing. For both the flywheel nut and the pulley nut, I wedged my engine stand in the corner of my garage to stop the whole stand from turning.
Image

Once the pulley was off I then removed the front engine cover.
Image

Then the oil pump and chain. To help me when I reassemble the engine I have put all the parts I removed in Sandwich bags with their associated bolts and nuts.
Image
Image

Next I removed the rear stationary gear. I think I'll replace the bearings...
Image

Before removing the rear plate I make up the through bolts with numbers provided in the workshop manual Image

I did get the rear plate, rotor and rotor house removed but I will post photos tomorrow when I have photos that better show their condition.

You're either going to have a good day or a really bad day tomorrow, that's the way it seems to go. Either all the parts will be ok and reusable or none/few will.

Fingers crossed for you.

I reckon that'll be ok. That's not the worst bearing I've seen. Is that a score in the copper though?

Great effort. Reminds me I really need to find time to put the engine in my garage together...

I in the scheme of things the cost of replacing the bearings is nothing so I had planned to replace them unless there turned out to be no wearing. The manual shows a tool for pushing them out, where can I get one?

The first rotor housing I removed had black brown staining, I'm guessing from burning oil.

What is best way to clean this off? Will it come off?

That all looks pretty good to be honest. Most of the black marks will clean off.

Tackle the rotors with a wire brush on a drill for the combustion faces. Just be very careful around the apex seal slots and don't allow the brush to rotate against them as they can distort.

A roloc pad on a drill is best for cleaning up irons and the sides of the rotors. Use a medium compound and lots and lots of parts cleaner of similar, don't let it get too hot.

Be careful cleaning the housing faces. They mark really easily, so just a wipe down to get rid of the marks with degreaser should be enough.

Not the best I've seen but definitely not the worst either! To be fair you have done pretty well, the E shaft looks like it has some wear but difficult to tell from the photos.

Front and rear irons look fine, centre ok, housings are ok from what I can see although the chipping at the edge looks quite prominent.

You won't really know until all is cleaned up. But on the face of it all looks ok.

Keep up the good work!

This week I received my rebuild kit thanks to MadTaz who sourced it for me. So if your looking for a rebuild kit yourself give him a shout, he's been very helpful.

The kit I have is mainly OEM with exception of the apex seals which are the Atkins Advanced Black Seals. I have also opted for the 231 bearings, updated oil regulator and thermal pellet.

Image

On 20th November I'm due to got down to Rotary Rev's to have my plates ported, once this is done I'll be starting the rebuild.

So yesterday we had a trip to Rotary Revs and met Ben and his guys.

Collected my new Exedy clutch and D585 coil kit.

Image

Image

Image

I also took my front and rear stationary gears and rotors to have the bearings replaced and had my irons street ported too.

While there Ben diagnosed my engine with having bearing failure on the rear gear where it had slipped.

Ben advised me to check the eccentric shaft:

What do you guys think? The shaft has gone blue where it sat in the bearings but the wear can't be felt by hand.
