Jays Nordic Green Bridge Port

Post by jrmurray1108 » Sun Oct 12, 2014 5:18 pm

Been on here a while now and after many posts and mods thought I should get it all in one place.

All started on EBay. Knew I would buy the car when I first saw it, was just a question of the price coming down enough, which after many no sale listings it did :D

Only problem was it was in Newport and I was in Leeds!

So here is what I started out with..

Image

Was an interesting ride home with 4 non matching tyres, one a different size, one on backwards, one down to wire and the other just about legal. Every dashboard light was on or flashing!

First job tyres.... Then I saw these on gumtree with new tyres for less than a set of tyres, sold!

Image

And fitted, no more warning lights. First lesson: any traction or steering lights check tyres and pressures first :)

Image

More to follow...

Next thing I saw was this for £80 on eBay... An uneducated purchase, Simota induction kit. Looked real nice fitted but the car ran like a bag if spanners so I relisted it on eBay and doubled my money to a guy in Germany who was aware of its pitfalls..

I ended up putting stock airbox back on with a pipercross panel filter

Image

Also bought some other bits...

Brembo pads
Apex springs
Vi OBD logger
Cobra cat back exhaust
200 cell sports cat

In it went for fitting, all issue free.

Image

Image

Sounded better, and looked better

Image

More to come....

Then I wasn't happy with the slightly tatty kind of leather seats, just as I was being unhappy these popped up on eBay so I made another uneducated buy....

The girls liked them :)

Image

What I didn't realise was the shape of the floor pan was far from standard so took a while before I could get them fitted. In the end I ordered the bespoke runners from Corbeau in the US and had my brother smuggle them back for me... Was a long 8 weeks until they landed! They were also heavier than expected but still lighter than stock when combined with the seat.

Image

Fitting was straight forward mechanically, 4 bolts.

Image

However, this put the airbag light on so had to solder a resistor to the seat side of the wiring loom to plug into the airbag circuit. Bought from Maplin for 30p each.

Image

Image

After fixing this it was still on because of the seatbelt proximity sensor. Had to cut the loom off the stock seat and adapt and re plug into the car. This sorted it out (no pics I'm afraid)

And finally....

A nice set of Rotary revs coils came up for sale on here courtesy of Phil so I bought em! I did have a set on order from a company called BennetBuilt in the US but he was messing me around a bit, great price though for a comparable kit.

Image

Took them to Bens for fitting and had the dwell timing and a mini remap done.

Finally had a few cold start issues so put a new battery in from here...

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1023215719

Didn't fix and found that the mesh on the air intake were knackered so put in a fresh set, cleaned the MAF and reset the ECU trims and it's spot on. Car turns over at 320rpm and starts much quicker.

THEN....

The Mrs found out how much money I spent and put me on a diet!!

I am sure though there will be more to come.....

Looking good and a few nice mods there 8) .

As you found out the RX8 can be really fussy when it comes to air intakes/induction kits and I'd say only ever go with either the Racing Beat one or AEM one(which I have) although I have heard of a couple of people having a issue with the AEM one although I never had any issue and it sounds brilliant at full revs.

The bucket seats look great and if you do any trackdays you'll really notice the benefits. I was at a track day reasantly and went out with a few of the guys in their RX8 and Aston has some bride bucket seats in his and they hold you in much much better on the track than the OEM ones.

As you've found most things aren't straight forward when it comes to modding an RX8 so it can be worth doing your research first although when you get things right it's worth all the effort.

This is my second green car, had an A3 a very similar colour. The nordic is brilliant, gold in the sun, black at night and green in between

Cage and harnesses next I think, then intake at some point...

Would really REALLY like to supercharge it but am a while off yet...

Looks like the money sapping will continue. Following recent cold start issues and a trip to the RX8 grim reaper (Ben at RR ;) it seems my stationary rotor bearings are knackered.

Need to save a few more pennies then it will go in for a port and rebuild.

Will update the thread with progress

Just a little update....

Ordered some bits today ready for the rebuild....

Mazda rebuild kit
Stationary/rotor bearings (with 5% off from MRP)
Cheeky SS manifold while the engine is out

Now need to consider a clutch I suppose while it's apart?
Would also like an AEM or REVI but low priority with other costs racking up.

Ben has kindly offered to do the rebuild whilst I supply the (genuine) parts so I can spread the cost a bit, will most likely be getting a bridge port at the same time. Hopefully will be ready to go early December. [-o<

Will be at RR for take 2 of my coilover fitting on saturday, will the car still be there?

Thanks Derry

It will indeed mate. Bodywork is a bit grubby at the minute but feel free to poke around, will treat it to a detail after the rebuild.

The rebuild will include a lightweight flywheel, and new SS manifold, it's also having a pretty extensive bridgeport. I have also just ordered a nice Sparco steering wheel that will compliment the seats niceley, it's the one on the left, she had to look the other way as its so cool it made her nipples stiff ;)

Image

Next big job is interior strip and cage I think, then I will be following you down the coil over road.

For anybody buying a toyo manifold the mating face is shocking. I found these guys in Leeds who did a good job of getting it flat for me.

Ashby & Anderson
Engineer

Went to Rotary Revs to drop it off along with my Bahnhof clutch I got from the U.S. for under £100.

Caught Ben doing my Bridgeport and staying late to get it done. Looked very intricate work, can't wait to see the results.

Got home and this was waiting for me, very happy with it, just waiting for the boss to come

This is going to be a really cool motor. You'll have to post up a vid of the bridge ported engine running. It's going to be interesting to see how it sounds. Can't beat a bit of brappage!

Will do, Ben says it'll need a full rolling road tune at 3-5k miles to get the best from it and then some further tweaking, there is talk of many extra horses ;)
