Ian's R3

Post by kopite72 » Tue Aug 12, 2014 3:33 pm

Hi Guys,

Well I've been joined here for a good few years now so I thought it about time I got my arse in gear and did a project thread of my own soooooo here it is

Bought her almost four years ago now bone stock.Always wanted a R3 but was under pressure to buy her because as some of ye guys will know she's the only one in Ireland so the seller had a lot of interest in her so with that said I had to sell the TT for a song just so I could secure the R3 ( yeah yeah I know what yere thinking ) BUT she was a great car and a nice bit of poke to boot :D .....quick pic of her
image.jpeg

And a few of the R3 when I bought her....
image.jpeg
image.jpeg
image.jpeg

Soooo first thing I did was tint out the rear and sides, nothing mad but just wanted a light tint to set the car off a bit....
image.jpeg
image.jpeg
Had the wheels refurbed and decided to touch up the calipers, previous owner only did the fronts and it wasn't a great job si I set about it think red goes well against the diamond grey 8) also had black diamond discs fitted, think they look well...
image.jpeg
image.jpeg (747.06 KiB) Viewed 866 times

Had a few days off work so quick trip to Halfords to get the bits and pieces and set to work on the engine cover etc etc........
image.jpeg
image.jpeg
Ok after the cosmetic stuff I really hankered after the MZ Customs kit and am happy to say I picked her up from the bodyshop today, delighted with the results :D I'd just like to say a massive thank you to both Rod and Mark who have been absolute stars. They have given me great advice ever since I first joined here and can't thank them enough =D> The club really is very very lucky to have these guys and as I've said I can't say enough about them, thank you gents =D> Aaaaaaaaaanyways here's the MZ Kit....

Just this morning :D The more observant of ye will notice there's no Mazda badge, that's because I'm still undecided as to what to do  Badge.....yes or no guys

I love the rear skirts, they really do balance the look of the car beautifully and carry on the lines of the side skirts nicely 8)

She's crying out for a set of spacers.....They are opn the " to do" list

Just to mention about the MZ nose, the downforce it generates is superb.I was throwing her in to corners earlier and she was glued to the road =D> It's much much better than the stock nose believe me and anyone who's on the fence about the MZ front end it's time to climb off.....it's superb =D>

So that's where I am ATM but I've a lot of plans for her...

SHORT TERM...
First off I gotta get her through the NCT ( your MOT),that will be done at the end of the month, after that it's a phone call to Ben and get her booked in probably the first week of November (if it suits Ben) where she'll be getting a " master service " and a mini map plus a compression test, also planning to attend the Yorkshire meet and finally get to meet some of ye fine fellas ( and gals)

Next up is a set of eibach spacers, the car is shouting out for them. The arches need filling and the more aggressive look is what im after

After the spacers is a visit to a bodyshop to get all the dings and God damn dents out of her  Pinch and zoom and you'll see plenty but they will be sorted soon enough

Pettit Catback is on the list and that will be going on later this year ( 2015 ) when im over at Ben's

Almost forgot.....The stock discs have almost had it so I'll be looking to get the RB discs soon.Plan is a RBBBK but ive put a set of Black Diamond discs and Mntex pads on in the meantime because i couldnt wait the 4 weeks it would have taken for the RB kit to arrive
MID TERM....

I need to drop her aswell so I've a set of Meister Zeta R's in mind

I plan to put a sweet set of 20's on her but as Rod will attest to,it's an absolute ball ache trying to decide on a wheel that combines everything I'm looking for #-o I want something that's very close to the stock weight which is approx 10-11KG's but want them to be visually striking but don't want to be homeless after paying for them  I'm partial to a deep dish wheel and have a few sets in mind so I guess ill see whats what when the time comes

LONG TERM.....

Ok this is a biggie and expensive but I'm planning a full respray in Aurora blue.I adore this colour and personally I think it looks stunning on a R3 ( all the R3 colours are gorgeous ) but this really appeals to me.It's big money to get it done but it's a long ways off yet so it's save save save for a while

Lastly I need to get a second car as a daily because the more I do to the 8 the less I want to use it as a daily.Been looking at lots but what I really would like is a MX5 coupé with the electric folding roof in......yup Yeve guessed it.....stormy blue  Maybe a 06 or a 07,I'll probably come to the UK to buy because the choice over here ain't great tbh

Anyways that's the car so far, comment away guys and be honest, don't worry I've thick skin

Looking fantastic there Ian! =D>

People seeing that in their rear-view mirrors will soon move out the way ... or risk being eaten  especially once you have the spacers and lowering for an even more aggressive stance.

(and a very nice TT you had, too).

That would work - or, as it will leave holes that would need filling etc, you could turn it into the evil M and maybe plastidip it.

Hi Duncan, thanks a mil  I decided on getting the beam behind the mesh painted the same colour as the car just for contrast and for me I think it works, like to hear yere comments tho and be honest!! Regarding the de-badging the more I look at it the more I like it,think I might be giving the bodyshop a shout to de-badge the boot ( except for the RX8 bit )

Nice, very nice Ian

The bodykit is amazing and the car looks great. Your TT looks like it was well looked after but the TT is light years away from being as good looking as an R3 =D>

A BBK would compliment it nicely but as you say, it is all money.

About the changing colour, would you consider going plasti dip or something like that?

Hey Paul, thanks man  Yeah looked after the TT well and the guy that bought it got it for an absolute Song but my hand was forced  I'm not a fan of plastidip Paul,I'd much rather a full respray but a respray is expensive. Was chatting to the bodyshop guy today and asked him how much, told me at least €5K but as he knows me well he'd do it a bit cheaper but even still it's very expensive. If I ever get it done she'll only be coming out to play at the weekends and meets.

Was in France last year and pulled in to a station for juice, there was a Beemer plasti-dipped from front to back, top to bottom and for me it looked terrible, that's no disrespect to the guys who have it done,it's just a personal thing.+1 on the RBBBK

Fair enough on the plasti dip. I actually saw an 8 in a magazine that had a full matte black plasti dip done and I thought it looked really nice. Will look into it myself.

Be a shame to keep your R3 on the drive all the time. Why not keep using it as a daily?

Hear you on the MX5. Test drove one (only a 1.8litre) and she was very nice. Better off going for the 2 litre but will have to buy in the UK for that one. I remember Rod posting a picture of one on here and it was stunning.

That's the plan Paul, has to be a 2L there's just not enough poke in a 1.8 or worse still a 1.6  Saw a gorgeous 2L ( private sale ) on the UK autotrader 50 odd on the clock only looking for circa 5K sterling, thing is the VRT is around €3K so about €10K all in.....gotta love our grubby little govt :roll:The more you do to a car Paul the less you want to use her as a daily.Imagine spending €5K on a respray and still taking her to work and parking next to people who couldn't care less about banging their doors off yours  it happens all the time where I work and really gets on my goat

The full respray is a long term goal though so you can drive it daily for a while yet!

Are you going for the coilovers? I see there are Ohlins which people rave about. Maybe worth checking out?

We should take our cars to Mondello for a day!!! If you can handle seeing S1 tail lights all day that is!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks John,it's definately the best front end for the R3 and Rod is spot on saying had Mazda had it on the R3 from day one they would have sold a lot more. The concept car had something similar but as is the case with most concepts they didn't go with it....open to correction here but I think this was the concept car...
