Check with him and apparently it wasn't limited in Japan.

No when you said you saw plenty I guessed it can't have been. There were just 200 of those here, right at EOL for the model. Thanks for checking.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Finally got my car back from having it glass coated and re-registered!
Apparently you're supposed to re-register your car when you move to a different area (Tokyo has a few areas to which cars get registered). Not sure how important this is, but since my old number was supposed to be temporary while I tried to get a "proper" number, and never being able to get a "proper" number in my previous area (it's a lottery if the number is popular), it made sense to retry in my new area. After failing to get my preferred number a few times I gave up and settled for the number below. Not bad either really.
Since I moved I've had to park the car outside and the crazy summer sun here does cruel things to your paint (especially white), so went ahead and spent a lot of money to get the poor car glass coated. It's soooo shiny! It supposedly super repellent for water and such too. From now on I'm only supposed to wash it with water. Soap and composite wax are no-nos.
Next month is the SHAKEN. Our bi-annual MOT like money pit. Sigh. Have to make this legal to push it through.. Money...

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Expensive to live due to the rereg (probably a waste on money) or the pesky sun? Or the annoying Shaken? God I hate the shaken. Every time I have to change things to make it pass, and then change things back.
I don't know the details about the glass coating, but it's some body coating they apply that while expensive, protects your paint from the sun and also makes it much easier to keep clean. It lasts for many many years keeping your car nice and shiny. You're not supposed to use soap/shampoo, wax, etc. when you have this coating, just water and a soft towel.
Also came with a certificate so that if I need to claim insurance (if someone hits me or something), I can wave it at them and get more money for the repairs.
My hub bearings up front might be bonkers...? Scraping metal sound when things warm up sometimes..

My car has been at the shop for over a week now and still not finished, but some updates to share..
Glass coating is great! Anyone remember a picture I posted earlier about how the car looked after one night at my current outdoor parking spot? Well, that doesn't happen anymore! Several rainy and dusty days before dirt starts to get visible. Sure, the price of the coating could buy me a used subcompact car, so the value proposition is still a bit iffy.. Here is a picture after two weeks without a wash:
Also proud to announce the car has passed the SHAKEN (Japan's MOT)!!
Uh.. Not without some caveats naturally... To get the ground clearance requirements the wheels were pumped up until that lifted the car enough. Usually we swap out the wheels to get past the requirement that wheels are not supposed to stick out further than the fenders, but this time we tried a new approach (as I couldn't be arsed to transport my stock wheels to the shop); temporarily glued on some crap to the fenders as some sort of fake fender extensions! Also, to pass the noise requirement a ring was temporarily slotted into the exhaust. Maybe some more things I don't recall right now, but the car passed in the end!
As mentioned above though, the car is still at the shop. Fixing some problems. The front hub bearings are busted and the front brake rotors are warped. Got to change those and brake pads.

My eight is still at the shop. The hub bearings are stuck (basically welded stuck by heat) and getting them off has become a bit of a challenge. If we can't get them off there are more parts to buy so hopefully we can get them off somehow...
In lack of progress on my eight, I figured I'll present this little thing I'm zipping around town in in the meantime! This Nissan Cube is brilliant in ways an eight isn't, and in none of the ways an eight is. "Cube my room" was the catch phrase in its commercials, and it truly feels like a room, with two sofas, on four wheels. Super practical, yet sort of funky.

Right? Not sure any car embody quirky Tokyo-ness more..
It's not fast though and today is 7's day (7/7) and there will be tons and tons of RX-7s out (last year http://www.speedhunters.com/2015/07/the ... continues/) while I don't have anything to go chasing 7s and go rotary watching in tonight

Finally got my eight back a couple of days ago! It was away for almost a month..
The busted hub bearings (apparently this happens a lot with eights..?) had warped the brake discs and scratched up the brake pads. Also, getting the hub bearings off turned out to be a time consuming challenge. They had gotten stuck. Almost like they got welded stuck by heat. So the poor car was sitting around at my friend's shop for awhile.
Anyway, we eventually got them off. Got new hub bearings, new custom IDI GT2 custom brake pads (as before) and replaced the old brake discs with slotted Dixcel SD brake discs (in reverse rotation). Took the car for a quick spin on Shutoko highway and it seems to be working well. No weird noises or anything. Nice to have the car back.

Glad you have the car back Tom and hopefully it's cured the withdrawal symptoms. As for the bearings being a common occurence on the 8 we have had very few instances (compared to the number of cars) with issues of this nature and certainly not where they have caused damage to the brake rotors.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

Thanks!
Hm strange. Here it seemed like a common issue for the hub bearings to go when the shop talked to Mazda and checked out forums. Oh well, at least it's all good now though it hurt the wallet.

I've missed the music controls that was on the stock steering since I got my MOMO. Pushing the buttons on the satnav isn't the same. Then I found this, the Satechi Media Button (http://www.satechi.net/index.php/satech ... dia-button). I cut off the clasp of the steering wheel mount that it came with and attached it flat onto the steering instead (if you glue the unit directly, as they suggest, you have to tear it off to pair other phones or change batteries which is a drag).
Works great with my iPhone!
* no issues with iOS10 despite what some rumours said!
* I heard that on Android it is treated as a keyboard which sounds troublesome

If anyone wondered why it’s been quiet in this thread for awhile, it’s because the car and I were in an accident 2016/12/07 (Wed). Unlike the track accident I had in my last 8 (http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/vi ... 04&t=53480), this wasn’t my fault! It was at night and I was driving on Shutoko Highway (the famous elevated maze of an highway hanging over Tokyo) at uncharacteristically sober speed when someone hit my rear right sending me into a spin down the highway. Luckily I managed to recover before I went into the wall, but the brief moment I saw the wall rushing towards me was unsettling. The other car took out my tyre, wheel, and smashed my rear right suspension (coilovers, arms, etc) etc.
The after match with insurance etc. was (still is) a massive hassle. Even if the other driver think it’s his fault (and I happen to agree!), his insurance company wants to split the blame. In Japan both parties are partly to blame if both parties are moving (something like 10:90 or 30:70 I guess). My insurance company is still trying to make it as low as possible so it’s been dragging on and dragging on.
So.. after three months of sporadic rehab sessions for back and neck pains and five months(!) of having to zip around in the wife mobile (http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/vi ... 36&t=71405), I finally got the 8 back! It took forever to fix because of initial back and forth with insurance companies on estimates (they're all pricks) and sourcing the parts.
In the old days you would get the shop to estimate a bit generously and fix things to your liking, but these days it doesn’t work like that anymore. The other party’s insurance company will make an estimate, so will the shop, and then they will negotiate. Basically there are fixed terms and fees for all sort of things and they will review all the receipts for parts, they want pictures of parts removed being cut in pieces to proof that it was indeed replaced, etc. and they do inspections during the repairs. It really sucks and takes forever and since they don’t provide a substitute car in Tokyo in the meantime they have all the time in the world.
Luckily the body damages were exterior only and not severe enough to flag the car as an “accident car” for the future. The frame and everything is bang on and nothing got out of whack. The repairs were good. I can’t tell that the body had damages. Also had everything repainted and recoated. As for parts my old coilovers were custom made by HKS on NRD specs and to try to speed up the process I opted to go for Tein MonoSport instead, throwing in the EDFC Active I had lying aroud from my old car (this was cheaper so the insurance companies didn’t complain). Getting a replacement wheel took forever though as it's out of production and the insurance company wouldn't pay for, say, a full set of TE37SL instead. Also wanting one wheel isn't exactly priority for the wheel maker, but after a few months of delays they finally got me one saying it would be the very very last ever. Then of course when everything was put together the traction control went crazy and neither the shop nor the dealer could figure out why. The car even went to Revolution over this without success. Eventually the shop figured it out though and now the car is finally back on the road.
Haven’t had time to drive it much since I got it back earlier this week (and today is the first weekend and it’s pouring down like mad), but it feels alien and weird after so long. The Teins seem more compliant on street and bounces are more controlled than with the HKS, but initial impression is that the HKS corners flatter and feels better at high speeds somehow. Having EDFC back is nice though. In my old car I had it embedded into the transmission tunnel behind the shifter, but that was difficult to adjust while driving so for now I’ve just stuck it onto the mid console.. Doesn’t look as pretty though so not sure if I’ll keep it there. Really isn’t many places to mount things in these cars. Any ideas?

What a pain - well done on keeping it away from the wall on three wheels though and glad to hear you're back on the road again. Are your back and neck OK now?

Thanks! Good to be back in the car.
Not sure.. neck seems ok, but lower back sometimes isn't quite right.

Sounds like a total nightmare. You are not having much luck with 8s. But well done on getting such a fantastic car back together again. Hope it's smooth sailing from now on.
