Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Getting cold here in Tokyo; 8 takes longer to warm up and it rattles a lot more than in the summer. I suppose it’s both that it does in fact rattle more and also that it’s more noticeable now that I drive with the window closed. Feels a bit plastic fantastic. Wish these were put together better.
Went for lunch at a hotel and the bellboys at the entrance were not confident I had enough road clearance for the underground parking so I got parked on the non-parking zone in front of the entrance instead... which is free and much quicker to get to than the underground parking so no complaints.
Not sure it feels like the fitting car to roll up to nice hotels in now that I think about it. It feels worse when going to something formal like a wedding or funeral.

I think that car looks smart enough for any event, and well worthy of its prime parking spot

Thanks
It’s not the car per se, but the aftermarket Bride seats and towing hooks, not to mention all the rumbling noise it makes, that makes it feel out of place.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Yeah, that Bayside Dave blue is nice! There is one that drops into Tatsumi PA all the time and it’s a popular colour. Wasn’t that the colour in the original factory brochures?
I guess it’s also that it’s the “Fast and the Furious” blue, but I don’t think that franchise has meant quite as much for these cars’ popularity here as it did abroad as the cars were well known and popular here before those movies, so maybe the association to that colour is weaker here..? Not sure.
All that being said, I might prefer it in white. :-P
Anyhow, this R34 is an NRD (Nakane Racing Design) build and NRD’s GT-Rs tend to be white and have “1” as their number plate.
Here is an example of a nuttier NRD R34:
This thing is wicked. Flames shoot out of the side. :-)

Low on fuel and forgot to fill up before getting onto the highway for a long drive all the way down to Yokosuka for a BBQ at a friend’s place.. trying to stretch each litre isn’t very fun in an 8. :-/

A couple worries have cropped up on this car recently...
Sometimes it does a bit of huffing and puffing when I start it up (but not when I try to record a video of that of course). Given that it’s been maintained properly and “only” 43k km it seems early if it’s compression, no?
Also, last weekend a friend visiting Japan had a go in it around Shutoko and Wangan and hit a car part that a car had dropped on Wangan. The part was about the size of a fist, but seemed solid as the 8 jolted violently as it ran over it (in his defence, there was no warning and no way he could have avoided it). Car makes rattling sounds sometimes. I can’t see any damage, but hard to say for sure without lifting it. Maybe it hit and bent one of the Autoexe braces causing the exhaust to rattle against it...?
Anyway, need to take the car in to a friend’s shop and get it checked out.
↑ Car, after hitting said object, at an underground car park in Shibuya where they get shuffled around like sodas in a vending machine.
Though staff at car parks often wear masks for all sorts of reasons (having a cold, pollen allergies, just keep dust away, etc), I feel that there is more masks around these days with everyone being worried about the corona virus. Maybe it’s all in my head though.

First things to check for slow starts are the non-rotary stuff - starting with the battery.
Check age, condition, electrolyte levels, terminal clean and tight.
Then follow -ve cable down to earth point on body. These can go rusty.
As for rattling after impact, check underbody plastic cover and cat heat shield.

Thanks a lot for the helpful tips! Pretty spot on!
Just got back from my friend’s shop where we got it on a lift and checked out.
The huffing puffing might just be the plugs. So that’s good.
The under body was more interesting. The car part that we hit has struck the car severely in two locations
↑ The under panel in the front of the car:
↑ AutoExe member brace/arm on the rear right
The latter is pretty impressive. It has almost torn the massive steel brace apart. Glad it didn’t damage the fuel tank.
The rattling seems to be these two bent things hitting the body when either one vibrates (like when idling). Bent them away from the body for now so at least it doesn’t rattle anymore (from what I could gather from the drive home... might rattle again when cold, dunno). I’ll take the AutoExe arms off at next “shaken” in a few months. Not sure if I’ll replace them or live without.. I’ll see how soft the car feels without those arms (I’ll keep the other AutoExe braces).

That was one massive impact
I'd me truly amazed if you could tell the difference without those arms.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
I’m not sure if I can tell the difference with those arms or not. I’ve never tried them separately from the rest of the set as I put on the whole set when I got them.
The difference with the whole set is surprisingly big. Much more than I had expected when I first got them. It feels much stiffer (so noticeable that my wife immediately started complaining about ride comfort) and chunkier somehow, and as the steering got very heavy the car also feels heavier/more deliberate.
Maybe without the arms it will be somewhere in between?

Took the car for a spin in the nice weather and went car spotting at Daikoku PA and Tatsumi PA. Looks like there are still some enthusiasts that aren’t hiding at home during these pandemic times.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Had to drop the wife mobile, the customised Z12 Cube, for “shaken” (biennial inspection). To avoid having to take the train back afterwards she followed me (in the 8 ) in the Cube.
It was good to see Nakane at NRD after the lock down and talk cars. I’ve barely spoken to any real people during the whole lock down. The place is still drowning in GT-Rs though the market (for R32/33/34) seems overpriced these days making it hard to trade them.
Once we get the Cube back the 8 will have to go in for its “shaken” within a week or two.
Sigh. These inspections would be so much cheaper and easier if we simply had legal cars.

The 8’s time to go in for “shaken” (inspection)
It’s a hassle. Needed to bring two(!) of the stock wheels and tyres and also the stock seat as these will be needed to get it through. Hopefully nothing else/new causes problems.

Hope all goes well Tom . Sounds a bit of a performance to change seats, wheels and tyres just to be able to change them all back again as soon as you drive away . A bit like us with the catalytic converters .
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

At least it's only every other year, though we've had an "MOT free year" this time around too, as they closed the MOT test Centres and turned most of them into Covid Test Centers

Every year sounds rough!
Yes, it’s a hassle to modify it to pass, and then modify it back afterwards. Also the inspection here costs a lot of money (expect it to be 1200-1500 GBP or so unless any new issues are found.. would be much more at a Mazda dealer).
The catalyser might become a problem this time as it barely passed last time. We’ll see.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
This took longer than expected, but I finally got the car back from “shaken” (inspection). Getting it through was a hassle! We had to temporarily do the following:
Swap in the original seat for to get rid of the airbag/seatbelt warning light.
Put it on the original wheels and tyres and raise the suspension.
Run a hose to the back of the exhaust to pump additional air into the exhaust to make it appear cleaner as the catalyser isn’t up to the task anymore.
At least it got through somehow in the end. Maybe it’s time to get rid of this car, but at least I got two years to mull that over now.

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Glad to hear it got through eventually Tom, and that you guys appear to be well.
I've not driven mine since January, and I'm really looking forward to getting back in it, as I've been driving pretty low powered diseasels for 5 months, and it's going to feel like a supercar in comparison..

Re: tmk's JDM RX-8 2011/S2, for fun mods
Thanks!
That’s a very long hiatus! Is it because of the lock down or? I guess that didn’t start before March or April though. Hope you get to take it for a spin soon while the weather is good!
Here it’s not so much enforced restrictions due to COVID-19 as that there isn’t anywhere I want to go because of the pandemic. I hardly drive anywhere these days, only taking the car around the Shutoko highway loop to keep the battery charged.

After being unused for a week, last Saturday...
Again, after a week parked unused, this Saturday...
Even if it’s been cold’ish, this is too often!
Wondering if something sips battery when parked.
