Following a track day in September she wasn't running right, I spent the next 2 months trying to track down a miss-fire and a couple of other niggles until eventually she died in early December.
She sat on my parents drive until mid January while I decided what to do, I finally took the plunge and pulled the engine out again and on strip down found the front stationary bearing had completely gone along with the E-shaft. The rest of the engine was probably OK but I picked this up from Ebay for a good price with only 53K on it.

DSCN2599.JPG
I then spent February removing the engine, March \ April stripping, cleaning, porting and rebuilding it before refitting it just in time for Japday in May(3 days before and only 50 miles). The only issue I had with the rebuilt engine was getting it to run for more than 5 seconds but after much head scratching I realised I'd forgotten to plug in the fuel pump resister, since then she's run like a dream.
While the engine was out I also fitted a lightweight flywheel.
She's now done almost 500 miles and I've treated her to an oil and filter change ready to start increasing the revs again.

The fun of owning a Rotary

I'll post some more pics once she's had another good clean, but very little has changed.

Thanks for reading.
Good to be reading your back in gear a working on the car modding away by choice rather than necessity as with the engine!

Over the last few weeks I've been thinking of the work I've carried out on the 8 and from that I thought I'd update my thread.
So here goes, as she was when I bought her back in 2011.
image.jpg
She had the following optional extra's
Gloss black ash tray and door handle surrounds
Strakes
Rear parking sensors
Sat nav
B pillar trims

Since then I've done the following
Engine
Full rebuild (1st lasted 16K, 2nd 4K and still going)
Street ported
Oil pellet mod
Uprated oil pressure regulator (95PSI)
Sohn adaptor
Custom 2T tank
Air pump delete
Fuel pump resistor relocated
Sound proofing removed
Lightweight flywheel
Exedy clutch
Braided clutch line
Short shifter
De cat (only some of the time)
Cobra exhaust
RR d585’s and leads
Mishimoto radiator

Exterior
Aero kit
Front air dam
Hoop spoiler
40th anniversay wheels (sprayed dark red)
Matching strakes & centre caps
Stainless steel V crest
Number plate re-located
20mm spacers
Brake calipers – full refurb and paint
Mintex 1144 pads all round
Black diamond disks
Braided brake lines
Brake fluid flush

Interior
Evolve interior
Gloss black steering wheel inserts
Aux mod
LED’s
Passanger foot rest
Dual vent gauge pod

And this is how she looks now, most of it is unseen.
P1040098.JPG
P1040097.JPG
P1030563.JPG
Next on the list
Suspension upgrade
Reconfigure 2T tank & add catch can
Replace gear box (starting to whine)
Underseal

And most importantly build my new garage so I can do all of this.

Thanks for reading
Cheers
Phil

Thanks Mark, the photo was taken at my parents house, I'm not sure the Rex would pull that.

Not only does this car look good but if sounds good as well. High quality work by Phil who is a regular at our monthly Allsorts meets.

Very nice. I like the colour of the wheels against the grey of the car. A colour coded alloy fuel cap would look nice.

That was on the list, grey fuel cap with matching red bolts, the wheels are getting to the point of needing a refurb. I would like some aftermarket ones so I can ditch the spaces. Next year i'll have to decide which way I go.
I currently still have my track wheels on so the red ones are stacked behind the house, a job for this week.

Still looking great Phil, good to see you've got the fresh build completed.

Just need to lose the pale grey.. ;)

It ideally needs a respray but with track days and regular use I'd be continually worried about stone chips. I prefer to get on and enjoy driving it but the time will come when it needs new sills so a good time for a respray.
See you soon John.

It looks like my project needs it's yearly update, work on the 8 has been slow in the last year due to moving into a house that needs a lot of work and the lack of a garage.
So it's just a few bits to update on

Dual gauge pod installed and working, I still have a couple of tweaks to get it how I want it.
The oil pressure is from a T piece at the Mazda oil pressure sensor location.
The oil temp is from a tapped banjo bolt on the oil filter housing with an oil temp sensor fitted to the sump, I plan to connect it to the same oil temp gauge with a relay to switch between the 2 readings (min and max oil temp).
P1040631.JPG
I picked up an Aluminium passenger foot rest cheap on Ebay, this was a pain to fit but looks good once done.
P1040624.JPG
I also got back to my Nexus install after having most of the components for many years, it's still not fitted but I think I've finally got the software working correctly (it wouldn't go into deep sleep mode).
P1040620.JPG
Apart from the usual routine servicing that's about it.

2018 will see BC racing coilovers fitted, Nexus finally installed and hopefully refurbed. wheels.

That's all folks, thanks for reading.

Cheers
