Blackmobile

Post by dino1now » Sun Aug 14, 2011 11:04 am

I decided to start a stealth project on my Black PZ. It always looked pretty mean, but I've seen various mods on other cars that just added to the stealthy look that I wanted. A couple of mods I planned were simple. Eyebrows from RotaryFX gave the front end a purposeful look.

Then came stealth side lights, again from RotaryFX, these were a simple swap for the old ones.

Next, I added matt black viper stripes.

My next plan was to darken the back lights. I had seen Fly Eyes, but wanted something a little more robust that remained legal. The tint would have to be applied to the inside of the lens. This involved splitting the rear light cluster. Not an easy task as the two parts are fused together and require splitting using a Dremmel and a hot knife. It was going to take time and involved some risk, so I purchased a spare set of lights to trial..............

Once the lights were split, the lens could be sprayed on the inside and the lights glued back together and sealed. I left a thin circle un-tinted around the reflector to keep it legal. The result is a much darker lens which allow enough light through to remain legal.

Next mod will be to black out the badges and tint the rear windows and maybe refurb the wheels in black.

@ chri5, Splitting the lights involves using a Dremmel to cut the two halves apart and the use of a scalpel heated up to melt the seam.

@ greysilverbeast, Me too Nigel and I may have the fingerprint scanner fitted by then too.

I now have the original set of back lights, so, if anyone wants this doing, I can tint my spare set and exchange for yours if in good condition. I would send the modified set to you and you send me your set back once they are fitted so you wouldn't be without lights at any time. It takes a couple of weeks to do and would cost about £100 for materials, postage and time.

How do you reseal the front lights if they have been split open? I have wanted to split mine to clean them up inside for ages but don't know how to go about it. Expensive if you cock it up!

The front lights are easier because they are sealed with a black waterproof sealant, which softens with heat. You can bake them in the oven and tease them apart. resealing is the reverse, heat the two parts in the oven and push them back together. To make sure they are water tight use Tigerseal after they are together.

:thumright: Looking very nice there I'm very temped to go for the stealth rear lights although they look a little dark to me, it'd be good to see them next to a set that hasn't been tinted.
What are the rotaryfx eyelids like as I've toyed with getting some eyelids for a while but I've found rotaryfx stuff very hit and miss some of it's good :) some of it's not so good :( .
It's always good to see people doing different and new things to their rexs.

The tint appears dark because it is applied to the inside of the lens. If it was applied to the outside it would appear much lighter.

The Rotary FX eyelids are good quality and made of a flexible high gloss vinyl, though they have to be fitted carefully as any air bubbles expand with heat and appear as bumps, which look unsightly.

I've been thinking of opening-up my headlights and fitting DRL's inside - much neater than some of the alternatives.

I've looked into this too and would look good, but you would have to build in some way of changing blown LED's. You would have to cut a section out of the bottom of the light and insert the DRL's and seal them in.

Other options I have used instead are very thin side emitting LED's fitted under the headlight.

I've just installed some new DRL's which are like the Mercedes ones, look a bit better than the standard straight ones and fit the splitter profile better. They are wired to the ignition via a relay to turn them off when the headlights are switched on.

Cheers for the pics but what I was really after was a side by side one of one with and one without the tints with the lights/brake lights on(maybe at dusk) so I could see just what kind of difference there is with the tinting.

Ah, I get you. #-o

I would have to put one of my un tinted lights back in and take some pics of both lights.

I will see if I can find some time to do that, meanwhile I'll take some pics of the tinted lights at dusk with the brake lights on tonight.
