doobeedoobedo was in the process of converting it to a EV drivetrain out of a nissan leaf. unfortunately life got in the way and he got no further that mocking up the ev motor and sorting out some of the transmission.
and now ive got a real job on my hands
i did consider trying to complete the ev swap, and if it was nearer completion i would but is barely started, and the cost would be immense...
i do have a leaf ev motor going up for grabs if anyone wants it, and a car that has had literally everything ice related ripped out to rebuild....
wish me luck.
oh, and i grabbed a few extra things whilst i was there...
and no the engine crane is not touching the bonnet. it is slowly lowering so it will eventually touch, but that's fine, but if it had be pressing on it whilst driving id now have a dented bonnet.
and yes, that puts me at 11.25hrs driving total, slight problem, max daily drive limit is 10hrs. i'm ok with daily duty time though as thats 15 hours. and i did it absolutely legally. you see, there is a tachograph exemption at play here. but why dont i use it all the time, you ask, and the answer to that is simple, it doesn't apply all the time.
i can quite legally drive in out of scope mode for private use, as long as there are no goods being transported. the tacho manual states that for the purpose of tacho regs, goods are any burden carried by the vehicle besides its normal equipment. so the tools, tyres, jerry cans, straps, living stuff etc are all not counted as goods, so on the drive up i wasn't loaded. this means i was quite legally out of scope. therefore the less than 6 hours drive up was counted as other work, not driving. having arrived, i deselected out of scope and put it on break (this isn't a job, so anything bar driving is not work) and that reset my working time before 6 hours, so again legal. then the drive back i had all 10 hours of driving left, so 1 stop for a 45min break on the way back and all was well and legal.
2 hours more or less took it from hard up against the garage wall on axle stands, onto dollys, sideways and out of the garage and onto the floor, evicting jerry the mouse by rolling the jack over him (that stank) brakes freed off, pumped the tyres up (lorry air hose ftw)winched out of the garage and round the corner to the lorry, loaded all the parts and tools in the lorry and the cars boot, winched on the lorry and lastly fiddling for ages as there are very few millimeters between the bumper and crane and rear bumper and door.
i know for sure i need a flywheel (231 as i have a clutch here for one), some hoses, oil cooler lines where cut, and a gearbox loom will need repairing. plus some of the exhaust is missing. other than that, im pretty sure its all there.
what I don't understand is why go to all that effort an only fit a leaf motor ? aren't they about 88 ponies ? that would have been only good as a city runabout
I am not a fan of EV`s by any means but for some reason unbeknown to me I would love to see and drive a properly sorted Electric RX-8!
As long as it had a decent leccy motor.

just oil lines to fit at some stage ( had them a while too)
to be fair if enough of the ev bits where present i might have given finishing it a shot, but id have to buy so many bits.... including a battery pack. y'know, the expensive bit.

Doobedoobedo cannot post in this thread, however here is the pm he sent me
got the car into the workshop today. access being restricted as it is, and needing to tow it in, i thought, why not make it easier and just take the quad over. i mean that'll work, right?
one lorry...
plus a merc+ quad trailer + quad
equal one rx8 in the workshop
sticking brake's means it needed dragging out of the lorry, then towing to the workshop doors, then towing backwards to line it up (this is where the skinny quad made life way easier) then winching in. it is possible to do the above with a car, but having to drive laps around the lanes to get in front and behind it would have added loads of effort and time.
so it begins. first job, repair the engine wiring loom and dress the engine.
what i started with...
gearbox loom repair
injectors
omp loom repair was a bit complicated, having to meter it out for 2 white/red wires (meters as common in main loom so no issues there) and 3 brown which involved checking pinout and identifying each individual wire. got there in the end
and then just dressing the engine, hunting out coolant hoses out of stock that fit, finding oil cooler hoses to replace the 2 cut ones, putting my spare rrp coils and msd leads on it (big sad, those where my test set, now i dont have any...)
i need to chase the threads on the l1 plug as it wont screw in, then its time to fit the engine.
so after a trip to harrys in Doncaster and home via arctic truck in lincoln to pick up a spare tyre for the lorry (at last, only been after one for a year) im home with a car full of bits. car averaged 52mpg total, 720 miles, just over a tank full (would probably have done it in a tank but i was 50 miles of local driving from full when i started and i chickened out). drive time 12:16, total elapsed time 14hrs including pee, food and codeine stops and chatting with harry
i now have the fuel pipes and all the bits and pieces i need, plus a r3 fuel tank for the racecar that i couldn't pass up at the price.
i also spent a half hour this evening dinitroling all the treated metal on the underside ready for everything to be fitted tomorrow...
so the clutch master has been a mission. i couldn't get the nut undone so had to cut the pipe off, not a major issue i can reflare it ok. but can i get a master. can i heck.
my usual supplier for clutch hydraulics is febi bilstein. they are out of stock nationally. genuine is silly money and ebay are all r3 spec. so its getting a r3 spec one. i've had to cut the pipe anyway, so i might as well remake the line to fit a r3 m/c. blueprint one will do, not what i prefer but its what i can get...
after trying to drown myself this morning by going to the lorry to fit a v band clamp, refit the brake chamber and put the wheel back on, i didn't feel like doing much in the workshop today. i did spend a hour out there doing a few bits and pieces, such as fitting the exhaust.
and the manufacturer and part number for the exhaust cat to silencer pipe. not expensive and a good option for those with rotten pipes who want to keep a standard exhaust...
