Re: The KRS thread....
so the reason for the locked engine is the a/c compressor being locked. cut the belt of and engine turns fine by hand.
but not on the key. no life at all. having glanced underneath i see that the power terminals are so corroded i cannot actually see the ring terminals for rust, so no chance that starter is ever going to work again. will stick a starter on it and see if i get any life out of the engine. would be a lot easier to move about if it runs... even if i do only have one working brake...

Re: The KRS thread....
Do you have a plan for this, or does it all depend on what you've yet to find?
I still can't decide what to do with my "parts donor" since I discovered that the "PCM fault" the caused someone to remove everything apart from the engine, out of the engine bay, was (almost certainly) just the melted wire to the rear O2 sensor!
Her underbody it terrible, though we've now seen worse resurrected, and she has the crease by the osr door hinge, but the only thing she's "donated" so far is the battery and audio unit. The R3 wheels she came on, and the decat that was in the boot, both got sold, so she doesn't own me anything moneywise, sitting on my car's oem wheels and some 20 yo tyres.
It sounds like she's in a better state than your example, which may yet be an influence on my decision....

Re: The KRS thread....
its scrap. unless the engine compression is in the 8's in which case as a complete car it'd be worth a fair amount, its going to get broken. not withstanding the usual rust, to make it acceptable it needs a pair of doors, repair to the boot lid and a complete respray.

Re: The KRS thread....
the current car in the workshop needs a few parts.
its currently got its gearbox off and im replacing the pilot bearing, which caused it to act like the clutch was not disengaging as it was seized to the nose of the input shaft and turning it with the engine running.
it also needs tyres and brakes all round, hoses and the sump is leaking.... which leads us to a black diamond and rrp order:

Re: The KRS thread....
UIM stripped off to replace coolant lines and vacuum line inspection, and to remove the damaged OMP lines for replacement.

wheels and tyres separated, tyres chucked on my trailer tyre/ roller wheel pile (perfectly good tyres but budgets) and wheels ready to go off for new premium tyres.

Re: The KRS thread....
spent a bit of time on making the rust monster run today.
but first, more rust photos...

so having checked the oil and water, and rolling it over by hand, i chucked a new starter motor in. i think you can see why...

found the battery to be absolutely stone dead
(that's my 12v-12v optimate in recover mode)
chucked a jump pack on it and...
idles nicely
that is genuinely the first time that engine has been started since 2013. 12 years idle and it started like it was switched off yesterday.
then the obligatory hot start.
and drives perfectly.... as long as you remember no brakes...

Re: The KRS thread....
We're 500 yards from the coastline but the storm in November had such strong on-shore winds, with a high tide and little rain, so you could taste the salt in the air.
The next day the windows on the sea view side of the house looked white washed.
Within a week or so, and still evident today, the sea-facing side of all the evergreen trees have turned brown, from "salt burn".
Everything metal outside has suffered too, even stuff that was galvanised.
It's the worst we've seen in over 10 years here, while other locals don't recall the massive effect on the trees, ever.

Re: The KRS thread....
a car came in today that ive seen before, as usual the customer had me check it over AFTER he bought it. also unsurprisingly in said circumstances, the news wasnt great.
compression results normalised to 250rpm
front
1 5.57
2 5.57
3 5.71
rear
1 5.84
2 5.78
3 5.78
not appalling, but lower than ideal.
the car was previously owned by a older gentleman, so i told him all is not lost, gave him some usage advice and recommended a full ignition oil and filter service.
it came back in today as the clutch isn't disengaging when hot. having diagnosed a failed master (scored bore and rust for top 10mm, black fluid with rubber particles floating) he asked for another compression test.
compression reading normalised to 250rpm
front
6.43, 6.56, 6.50
rear
7.05, 7.05, 6.92
that's better
customer is delighted with the news as he was saving for a engine rebuild....

Re: The KRS thread....
between servicing my and dad's mercs (7.5l oil EACH! good job my bulk oil happens to meet mb specs for the engine fitted to both cars) i thought as i have a set of warped disks and the pads to match them, i might as well see if sticking better disks on will leave me with brakes that at least somewhat roll and stop the car. this was successful, in fact 3 of the wheels roll just fine, one is tight as the sliders are stuck, but it rolls and stops, which is a massive improvement and means i can safely unload it and drive it into the workshop.
i have, however gotten fed up with pretending im BO Duke when getting into and out of it.
the mechanism unlocks, the handles do nothing. the doors are scrap, the door cars are however not so i cut a lump out of the door to have a look..

the little silver tag below the white nylon part is the actual door catch. the rod above and the nylon part is what to door handle attaches to. this is totally seized so the handles do nothing. pushing the silver catch down opens the door. on the drivers side i got it unseized enough to open the door from the handles, a bonus to get out of the car....

the passenger side is the same.

however for the life of me i cant unseize it, but i can pop the doors with a screwdriver now, so that's a win.

Re: The KRS thread....
ive got a picture somewhere of the middle of the sill where i tried to jack it up to lift the entire side of the car at once. something that it should be able to do easily. it didnt end well. there is NO inner sill left, at all. the outer is the only sill left... it sunk enough to bend the floor....
