unfortunately my gopro is flat so the only video i could get was a smartphone short whilst stationary, and it really doesn't do it justice...

Re: The KRS thread....
something a bit unusual today. a Infinity FX50S. a big, bright orange SUV with a v8. it came in with a nasty misfire, which turned out the be the ignition coils. a set of new coils and it now drives lovely
its surreal to drive, a big soft suv with nearly 400bhp!

Re: The KRS thread....
Interesting view, that confirms that R3s also rust just as badly as S1s - in case anyone still thought otherwise.

Re: The KRS thread....
to be fair its better than it looks, the arms are scaly and the shocks are rough but the shell is totally solid.
having said that the r3 i saw yesterday is a long way down the road to needing welding.

I've seen a very similar view to that recently....

Re: The KRS thread....
oh no.... oh no no no...
it is not knocking... but i don't dare run it any longer.
this is a newly rebuilt r3 that got recovered in because the oil pressure light was flashing. he also says he heard it start to knock.. good call by the owner. i was 'really' hoping it was the pressure sensor. the rebuilder is being very good about it, no arguments. asked me to diagnose it for him and go from there. i'll call him tomorrow and let him know, and let the owner know the results of the conversation. (he is a member so will probably see this
) the likelihood is the pressure regulator is stuck open. that's not a cheap part on its own... i really hope it hasn't done the bearings, but its not good.

Re: The KRS thread....
I once left spanners loose on the airbox like that, only one of mine vibrated across and bridged from the battery +ve to something, I assume it was the alternator, anyway I was sitting in the driver's seat and there was a big flash bang.
By the time I switched off, and got out to look, both the battery clamp and the spanner looked like someone had made a poor attempt to arc weld. Thankfully it didn't stick and the only damage was cosmetic, though I nearly shat myself
It all came back to me, watching the vid.
Hopefully there's no permanent damage to that motor either but it doesn't bode well for the stationary bearings.
Maybe, being an R3, with higher target oil pressure, there was enough to prevent damage.
Was it still being run-in, with reduced revs?

Re: The KRS thread....
so whilst awaiting parts from japan to arrive, hopefully should be here at the end of next week, i've been doing the job it originally was on its way to me for. r3's are not immune to the old rust bug.
this isn't too bad, mostly surface rust. there are a few holes though, which got cut out and replaced with good metal.
driver side rear wheel arch
inner sills...
drivers side front wheel arch all welded up and treated to prevent future issues.
next job is to prime, paint black and cover in dinitrol 4941 as a stone chip and underseal protection.
someone in the past waxoyled the rear subframe, it was very corroded underneath in all the usual areas. proper treatment will retard that nicely. would be nice to pull the subframe, shot blast and paint it, but its not in the budget.

Re: The KRS thread....
primed and painted. just some dinitrol on the sills and wheel arches and the weld repairs are done.
found a interesting feature of the r3 tanks. never noticed it before. kinda a 1 time use thing though...

Re: The KRS thread....
I wonder if the Waxoyl was ineffective or just applied after most of the damage was done.

Re: The KRS thread....
so that went well......
having serviced the car, done all the welding, found no metal in the oil at all, changed the pressure regulator which showed some scoring i was pretty happy i was nearing the end of this car. and i was right, just not in the way i hoped.
today's job was to fit the gauges supplied and harsc's old seicane head unit. that went well.
all working perfectly.
having then put the car back together for the last time i started it. or should i say attempted to. not surprisingly it was flooded. got it running and it didn't want to idle. also not surprising. what was surprising is what it did as it warmed up. i watched the oil pressure at idle get lower... and lower... and lower... i refitted my mechanical gauge and it agreed.... it has 10psi at hot idle and falling.
so i called pip.
so now i'm waiting for the owner of the car to turn up with MY car, so we can tow it to bodmin, load it on my lorry, and ill have to take it up to pip tonight.
this is going to be a LOOOONG! day....

Re: The KRS thread....
Just picked this up today. it'll be on the back burner for a while, but its a genuine 39k mile one owner car. been parked for 12 years as the owner couldn't afford to drive it, but it was right by the sea, and he refused to sell it. he passed away a while ago and the owner's son contacted me to see if i was interested. i offered him scrap value as i couldn't even open a door to pop the bonnet. that window that's open was smashed to get access, as even with a jump pack on it, the central locking opens but the door handles do nothing. same with the key. i told him i was ok with breaking it as that door is scrap anyway. every single panel is corroded. the roof, the boot, the quarters, both front doors are heavily rusted. the bonnet is white powdering badly, the rear doors are gone at the bottom, the sills are bad, the subframes are awful.... i had to take the front calipers off to get it to roll, on the rear one rolled the other didn't, but as it was downhill i needed to leave something to stop it rolling off.....
i would like to save it, but i doubt its worth it...
or even possible, tbh..

Re: The KRS thread....
That's nearly, or as bad as, the "parts" car I've got in the yard.
Strange that it's the same colour scheme - Titanium and rust!
