Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
I have an MOT with no advisories! Properly pleased with that result. It's now taxed and road legal
My excitement was slightly short-lived as the engine management light came on during the drive home. My basic bluetooth OBD scanner tells me it's P0661 "intake manifold tuning valve control circuit low".
I've cleared the code for now and will see if it comes back up when I drive it again later. I'll also have a look to make sure I didn't dislodge anything while dismantling stuff to fit the oil cooler lines.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
It could be a failing solenoid, I have several used ones if you need to replace one.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Thanks Chris (yet again!)
Having been out in it again for a bit of a run, the light came back on, so I will need to investigate. Having had a quick search, changing the solenoid looks like it needs a fair bit of disassembly.
The more pressing problem is the slipping clutch, which seemed quite a bit worse this afternoon than it did earlier. I think I'll get a quote for having it done as I'm not sure I fancy tackling it on my own on the driveway.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
If you have small hands and know what you are “feeling” for then disassembly isn’t strictly necessary.
If it’s fine on Saturday morning pop over and I still see if we can sort the solenoid.
A good independent garage should be able to sort the clutch for you but it’s advisable to provide them with the service sheet on the procedure to re-align the power plant frame. It’s a fair bit more complex than some other RWD cars due to the PPF and that the cat exhaust section needs removing to give access to the two top right bell housing bolts.
With your super ramps height it would however be easier than with trolley jacks, I did a clutch change once on my own and vowed never again as putting it back in is a Herculean challenge, not to mention pouring oil out if the tail shaft when the prop was removed and the gbox tilted!

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
if i didn't have a ramp (or a pit) and needed to do a clutch the engine would come out rather than the box off. its time consuming but way easier!

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
I've done a mini tour of visits to local club members over the past couple of days. First was a visit to Dr. FrankenRex to collect a used set of D585 coils, which have cleaned up nicely ready to go on:
This morning I went round to see ChrisHolmes to have a look at my suspected faulty SSV solenoid. Chris managed to get the solenoids off without having to do any extra disassembly and the solenoid was indeed dead, so was swapped for a spare from Chris's stash of parts.
We also did a compression test to see just how healthy my engine really is after 78,000 miles.
Front rotor:
Rear rotor:
These were pleasantly surprising results! I was expecting far worse figures as there's no evidence the engine has ever been rebuilt. There's a bit of variation on the front readings, but I'm hoping that they'll even out a bit as the car gets driven a bit more.
Big thanks to Chris for giving up his Saturday morning.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Your always welcome for the little jobs Russell!!! The numbers are really good for the mileage on the engine and once you have put another 1000 miles on the clock with a couple of decent long runs and numerous beeps we can do another test to see how that front rotor is doing.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Hope you're right and we see the numbers sort themselves out!
Managed to get the coils fitted this afternoon. Bit of a fiddly job to get the wiring tucked in place and the retaining nuts done back up but they went in OK and it runs smoothly.
All of the old coils were showing white patches on the bottom to various degrees, so it was worth changing them.
I'm assuming they're the original Rev 1 coils.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
It is not necessary to adjust the dwell timing when fitting D585 coils.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
To be clear, it was assumed that adjusting the dwell timing would maximise the performance benefit of fitting D585 coils.
However, it has since been proved that;
- there are no performance benefits of fitting D585 coils, with or w/o changing the dwell, compared to a good set of OEM coils.
- changing the dwell takes the duty cycle outside the design limits of D585 coils, above 8k rpm.
- a PCM load with adjusted dwell would soon cook a set of OEM coils, if ever you wanted to revert back.
Nothing wrong with running D585's with standard dwell.
D585's became a popular option because they were cheap and readily available in every US motor factor, compared with the first version of the Mazda oem coils, that were fragile and expensive.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
in fact IMHO its inadvisable. it pushes them well past their reliable duty cycle and means you cant change to oe or other coils without another remap.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
After deciding I didn't fancy changing the clutch myself, the car went in to a local garage for a shiny new Exedy clutch kit. Picked it up this evening after work and it now drives really well. Looking forward to actually putting some miles on it now!
I also decided to sort out the the dim interior lighting and swapped out all the interior lights for LEDs

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Looks like it might be the end of my time with this car. I haven't posted any updates for a while, but I've been enjoying the sound of a Toyosport exhaust for the past few months (another useful purchase from Chris Holmes!) since the standard one parted company with one of the tailpipes.
I got under the car this afternoon to have a look over it before the MOT next week and found that the rust has got worse than I thought it was on the rear sill. I managed to put my thumb through it! Based on what I can see, it won't pass in that state and although I'm happy tackling mechanical work, I don't have the time or skill to get into cutting out and welding sills. I very much doubt I can just get that small area patched as the area around it isn't in great shape.
I've got no idea how much it would be worth as a whole car, so the only realistic way of getting any money back out of it is likely to be breaking it for parts

Having had a second look at the pictures that's been repaired before probably poorly which is why it's rusty again. it shouldn't be a difficult fix It would only take me a couple of days

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
My garage is unlikely to be cleared out until around Christmas and is currently full of office chairs but if you want to park the car up until we can get in there to have a good poke around to see how far the rust goes then it may well not be a basket case. You can of course come over before then for an in depth, literally, look.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Take a look behind the arch liner before giving up, the panels you have shown are easily repaired if the rust goes no deeper, even if it does it is easily fixed, just takes longer.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
Thanks for the replies everyone. I've pinged a message to qwakers to get an idea of cost and need to work out whether it's possible to get the car to him by Tuesday when the MOT expires.
There is a small hole in the inner arch behind the liner, which I'd treated and painted up with stonechip when I first got the car. It's a bit of a case of various cosmetic bits round the car that need doing and working out how far to chase them all, but if the cost of sorting the sills to keep it on the road for a few more years isn't too bad then it might be worth doing.
I originally bought the car to avoid it being scrapped after the previous owner gave up on it. The previous welding repairs he'd had done were just patch repairs to get it through the MOT and it has deteriorated since then.

Re: Nordic Green 192 Project
That could be risky given the distance involved and the car would have to actually attend for the MOT if you were stopped on the way down. Plus a vehicle check would find the rot and with an expired MOT that’s not a good situation.
