Steve's hillclimb adventure

Post by Steve.82 »

So, having had a long standing rotary itch and a wish to start hillclimbing this year, last summer I got hold of my 1st RX8 and so far it's been great. Fresh engine build just before I got it and tatty enough not to be too upset if/when it has an argument with something solid.

It's relatively stock, just coilovers, exhaust, wheels and endless hours spent on Versatuner analysing datalogs so far. Permitted mods are quite restrictive in the road car class. I took it out for a members day at Shelsley Walsh last year which it did fine on. Pretty sure it was on 3 coils at the time... and standard gearing/wheel size which did not suit that hill. This week I did a driving school day at Prescott hillclimb. Not particularly cheap, but thoroughly recommend it to anyone tempted!

I have a long way to go to be at the sharp end in my class, but the nice thing with hillclimbing is that doesn't necessarily matter (yet...). I have a few things to improve and work on. 1st to 2nd shift time is painfully slow but I doubt I'll sort that this season.... and what's wrong with doing all of Prescott in 2nd anyway?! I'll likely stick with Goodyear Asymmetric 5's this year as it's a learning year. The biggest thing is probably me and seat time now. Out again just after easter at Shelsley for their drivers school 8)

Lashed it together with the on-board footage. I can see so much wrong with it not being in the moment  I need to find a better spot for the camera before Shelsley... Another foot forwards without the rear view mirror in the way would be grand.

A sucker mount on the sunroof is an option but you would need to have some sort of cable tie physical restraint to stop the camera flying around if it came loose.
Sitting a bit closer to the wheel with less straight arms would make steering easier.

If I change it to medium field of view that works a bit better, especially now I know the rear view mirror pops on and off quite easily. Good enough for next week anyway.
When I build another shell at some point it needs to be without a sunroof! I have to recline the seat a tiny bit compared to normal with a helmet on. I’m only 5’10, but got stumpy legs and a long torso…

Another day done at Shelsley today. Just another 4 seconds to find

Next month I have a members day at Shelsley again, then hopefully, finally, competition!

Good to see they're competitive in the right hands. I see one on here did some tinkering with final drive ratio's - I'm thinking the same. Will have to do some maths and see how an R3 diff would play with the S1 6 speed box, I don't really want to be so short I need a little burst of 4th gear before bottom S at Shelsley for example... What I should probably do is change nothing now for the rest of the season, learn a few tracks and start plotting next winter's activities...

Interesting... I run my fuelling fully open loop (many hours pouring over data logs, starting rich and gradually getting it to match the AFR tables with the VE table...). I thought it was running very slightly lean on the Wideband gauge (1.04-1.05 at idle instead of 1.00) and not quite as crisp starting at Shelsley... Found one of the plug leads had worked partially off its coil post. Pushed it back in and all back to normal :) Going to have to figure out some kind of clip to pop over them to keep them in if it does it again. I'm guessing that last bit of combustion being missed leaves some oxygen in the exhaust gas making it think it's lean, like it can do with a full blown misfire. Thing is, if it was in closed loop I guess it would have trimmed richer than it needed to be. No wonder these turn into a disaster sometimes with ignition problems...

Who'd of thought you could use a Wideband gauge to point out an ignition issue!

What coils?
If oem, then a ¼" drive socket extension pushed inside the clip on the end of the lead opens it up just enough for a firm lock in place.

RRP’s, not checked them since I put them on last year. Will check the lead routing too in case some are flapping around more than necessary.

Interesting to follow your hillclimb adventures, as Scott Moran is coming here on Friday, as we'll be looking after his car overnight prior to an event he's competing in on Saturday.

For those that haven't heard of Scott, this is him in action

We would be going along to the event but Pauline had already booked to go Zip Wire riding
I kid you not https://toddsleap.com/activities/zip-lines/
