Re: RR54 SC Track Project 297hp & 221lbft @ Flywheel

Post by ChrisHolmes »

AEM responded to my request for support by sending the resistance values for each terminal off the coils and all my coils tested in line with the values advised.
I couldn’t find a resistance value to check the ESS but it reads the same as two other ESS that I have.
I noticed that the trigger wheel was bent but it must have always been like that so is not the cause of the non startling but will be replaced anyway.

Hopefully I will get the engine out and stripped tomorrow and find out why I yet again have a stuck side seal on the rear rotor!
With all the belts off the E shaft turns smoothly without the binding that was evident when it was turned at Castle Combe!

Any disturbance of the ESS and/or its trigger wheel, would require a 20-stomp reset with the oem PCM.

What equivalent is there with your setup?

thats a oddity of the Mazda ECU
its not normal practice
you set the tooth setup in the ECU and then leave it alone on every other ECU I've encountered

I'd suspect som ekind of ECU issue or lack of ESS signal getting to the ECU from what you've described

Having a break. Just the engine mounts to undo and remove out of the way now and then it’s attach the lifting sling and out with the engine.
Oh, before that I need to assemble the engine crane!

Engine is out, sump off and no signs of any bearing material.
Eshaft had end float so that’s ruled out for causing the tightness.
Off to the Allsorts meet now so it will be tomorrow afternoon before I get the motor opened up to see what’s what in there!
Exhaust ports are a good colour so when it was running the mixture was ok.

After 3 1/2 hours the e shaft front bolt, flywheel nut and counterweight finally surrendered, as did my spigot bearing thanks to the puller screw!
So whilst things are much worse than I expected inside the engine the list of parts required for the rebuild is quite short. The front and rear plain bearings are totally fine, one rear side seal was not totally free to move so must have some debris in the groove but shows no sign of damage.

Water Seal Set x 1
Apex seals x 6
Rotor Housings x 2 ( Already have a good pair)
Spigot Bearing x 1

So the damage is shown in the photos and is listed below;

Front rotor triangular impact damage on one face
All apex seals have chipped sealing faces
One apex seal has the pointed end missing
Two end pieces missing
Housing deeply scored

Rear rotor slight impact damage
All apex seals have chipped sealing faces
One apex seal has the pointed end missing
Housing scored

Initially I thought the apex seal tips may have snagged on the bridge port edge but as the housings are not cut out to match irons eyebrow I cannot see that being the cause so aside from detonation I cannot think of any other cause of the damage.

By how much spark I presume you mean ignition advance, I will need to look at the map and it’s on the laptop in the garage.
The exhaust is the Racing Beat REV8 full exhaust billed as 3” but the ends of the dual resonated section are both 2 1/2” I presume to allow for fitment onto OE manifolds and cat back pipes.

The rotor damage looks bad but is superficial and hasn’t closed up the apex seal groove. It will live on.

No friction striations anywhere which isn’t surprising as I premix 300ml at every fill up which is usually from 1/4 tank and the OMP rate has been increased.
