I grabbed the vacuum actuator off of the vfad, but it's only got 20mm travel. I need 50mm. May look at shortening the arm

you can use any vacuum actuator can't you? and then run a small bore metal tube to it from the VFAD solenoid

turbo wastegate unit perhaps?

I've got the vacuum actuator off of the vfad. But it only has 20mm travel

I could of sworn I had a SSV lying about, I was going to cut the arm off and weld it to the bmw spindle.

Fingers-crossed that actuator survives the heat.

If the m140i doesn't melt the electric actuator, I'm sure it'll be fine.
The inlet is on the opposite side, probably by design

all up to your usual high standard Paul
whats the plan with this silencer then
its nice and quiet around town and then bypasses to go straight through when the VFAD solenoid opens at 5500rpm?
should be epic

Something along those lines yes. Need to run the copper vacuum (brake) line under the car and tee into the vfad vacuum line. I've found a spare vacuum vessel and one way valve which I'll mount near the air box and connect the rear actuator to.

I think I've got the VFAD solenoid logic wrong...

Exhaust valve is open at idle, not closed. I assumed it to work the same as the SSV/VDI solenoid, think I got it wrong

As I was driving out of my development, my neighbour said it's a lot quieter, so I guess it's been a success.
Annoyingly it's lost the 787b ring and has been replaced with a more raspy tone (vauxhall corsa fart box) . Certainly sounds louder at full chat, but I'm not sure if that's the back box doing it's job and muffling the sound in the back box instead of sending out the back of the car? !
The old exhaust sounded like a F1/787B car which you could probably hear for miles. This feels more muffled

something that always has a positive effect on exhaust note is to fit a perforated tailpipe / exit

The bmw tips are a bit different.

They push on, but could look at the muffled type

Well the exhaust is definitely quieter below 3k at light throttle, no doubt about that.
It's bloody loud up the rev range, akin to a Honda civic type r sort of noise

That's like the old Brooklands silencers.

They don't make much difference to the measured volume but they do help with the perception of noise.
