Re: Culdranth's galaxy grey, car is F**KED

Post by Culdranth » Mon Dec 31, 2018 7:57 am

well, on boxing day, as i posted on FB page, my car died coming off motorway after missfire cel light flashing. got it started 30 mins later and running rough as guts. having to keep revs at 3k when shifting.

Anyway, Just had an hour to work on car before I go bed. (working on it at 6am in pitch black is fun)
Cleaned airbox, airfilter cleaned best i can and maf cleaned.
Pulled all plugs and they where fine.
Car started up after 3 x 15second attempts
sounded like it idled fine, no error codes.
Went to put clutch in and it feels notchy as [edited].
I try to move in gear and it just looses all power and nearly stalls.
If i get it some revs around 4k its sounds like a mechanical flutter/chirping sound.....
ive heard that sounds could be the valve actuator but this sounds more metallic and it wouldnt make clutch feel weird or nearly stall it :/
Time to start ripping out the engine on my days off in a busy car park argh :'(

The consensus I have so far from posting this on the facebook group which was super fast and helpful (damn i love this community) is that my clutch release bearing has shat itself.
hopefully its a job that can be done in a parking space :(
Will have to watch a few videos and search forum for some guides, hopefully theirs one thats not just, wack on lift, drop it out wala haha.

It there any noticeable movement on the eshaft that might suggest a problem with the rear stationary bearing?
It's obviously not failed completely as the oil seal wouldn't have kept up with the movement and the clutch would have been wet with oil.

That release bearing looks okay in the photo, what does it feel like and look like at closer inspection?

The clutch itself is well worn but shouldn't be causing an issue - no signs of breaking-up.
There seems to be some marking as if some debris may have got trapped at some point.
Can't see any missing teeth on the ring gear. What does the starter look like?

not taken the flywheel off yet, was getting dark. a job for tomorrow and whip it off, give it a wiggle.
clutch is relatively new, got receipt from previous owner. dont know weather to use the other clutch i have.
starter was one of first things i replaced when bought the car before even had it running. looked nearly new still.
is their anything else I can do tomorrow to diagnose or would it just be best getting engine out?

Take the plugs out and turn the engine over by hand, if it's not smooth then that would be a clue.

Don't forget that it turns anti-clockwise, when holding the flywheel ;)

Just a heads up to everyone else: that's a Blue Print or other cheap clutch. Not worth putting back on.

Looks like the release bearing spigot out the gearbox is dry and the bearing may not have been sliding freely

I have a rebuilt 192 engine for sale, I can swap the flywheel for a 231 and then add a good used Oem clutch if your interested. It did have D585 coils but these have now sold. Ecu and lock set included as it’s been mapped by Rotary revs and now goes round to 8600rpm

Re: Culdranth's galaxy grey, I gave up :(

Post by Culdranth » Sat Jan 05, 2019 11:51 am

Well, as new title says.
Dropped motor oil and found copper and silver flakes, rotor bearing I guess, I turn flywheel and only 3 puffs per 360 and was very easy to turn with the park plugs in.
As people seen I've already started stripping car. It was a sad day. Already sold Cofs and coils payment pending.
Just bought a Nissan note s so completely other end of scale

Just for correctment: there should be 2x puffs per 360 degrees. You'd need to spin the flywheel 3x full turns to hear all chambers.
Also you'd maybe be surprised how easy they are to turn by hand with spark plugs in, even when healthy. But that's subjective I guess.

But yes, it sounds like a bearing has had it I'm afraid, bad luck :( I hope it was at least a bit of fun while it lasted.

Yh, had some fun as snakes pass is near me. Was just a bit too indulgent for what my wages are. This has been an amazing community though and I've learnt loads.
Was trying to ease my biker urge going for this car, was expecting more power from it. Maybe get another one again if finances change but would definitely want a 231 r3

Although I'm getting rid, it has been very fun and very knowledgeable stripping down the car. Not going as fast as I hoped because where its stored. Most of the interior is out. Bodywork should be going on Sat. Taking the wings off was much easier than I thought.
Don't know weather it's worth taking dash out or not and even trying to salvage the loom. I don't really know what people are after or if it's a waste of time
20190110_153137.jpg
20190110_153203.jpg
Took the lock out the driver door. That was a pain. Thinking best leaving that stripped so new guy can fit theirs easier.
Rear doors come off easy but is their a nack to get the door electric connector off first?

This was a sad sight last week :( sorry to anger all you. Timing was just utter sh*t :( if it went this month I would have been fine.
20190207_134944.jpg
20190207_140112.jpg
I struggled to even get rid of it :(
Feel like you need a dedicated space to have one of these cars.
The car will always be remembered now though as I have a bit bigger than 50p scar on my wrist from working on it lol.

I have made another post in the rx8 items for free section though as the rest of the parts need to be gone asap :( back in work Sunday so ideally gone before then, I know it's short notice but hoping someone local will take the lot, free, or if you want to throw some beer money :p my "giving back" to the community so to say since I've done such a horrible thing
