i suppose in theory if the main group is zigzagging about i could just drive from meeting point to meeting point which means i could keep up by using motorways...

Just as a point of note in any planning - Holyhead to Dublin ferry is around £150 a car plus driver (plus ~£30 per extra passenger), Belfast/Larne to Stranraer/Cairnryan is around £130 (+£30pep) for a random date in September 2019. Return journeys on either route with a few days in Ireland are effectively double the single cost, so no apparent savings that way.

The Mazda HQ is in Dartford, so that's going to be one big zigzag, and difficult to avoid central London or the M25.

Doable though - the Dartford crossing isn't actually M25 it's the A282 and you can get on and off without hitting motorway.
Plus the plan isn't necessarily to do it without touching a motorway as much as using as little motorway as possible, 'cos they're boring?

I have a couple of suggestions for a zig or a zag in Scotland. First off - the A82 across Rannoch Moor and through GlenCoe is a great road with great scenery. Another thing we haven't done on the NC500 trips - there is a lovely road that takes you over the hills and drops you down into Glenelg - there you will find iron age dwellings (brochs) if you're interested and a small ferry (the shortest crossing) across to Skye. We could take a quick trip round Skye or some of Skye before taking the bridge back to the mainland and carrying on from there.

Suggestion: If the convoy was zigzaging between overnight stops then the support vehicle could take a more direct route and still make it within the day.

An actual breakdown may require the support vehicle to be diverted (mobile phone call) but otherwise it would be ready and waiting for the pitstops e.g. brakepad changes, minor repairs, etc, in the motel carpark.

It could also carry any excess luggage and spare wheels ;)

Keep up Dave ;) - Wayne already noted that ^^^^ somewhere!
Also, "It could also carry any excess luggage and spare wheels" and spare coils, leads, fluids, pads.... etc.

Hmm, could we retrofit the van with a spare fuel tank or two? :-k

this would also be a good time to make sure everyone is up to date with their breakdown cover, a recovery done privately would cost a fortune.

"8 Ball Rally"

I feel the need for stickers.

Funny, I've only just thought of the connections between the 8 Ball and the RX-8
- "8" obviously
- the triangle to set the balls up
- a Magic 8 Ball is probably just as accurate as a compression tester to determine if your engine will last the year

Chris,

What a brilliant idea, god how I wish I had the time to do this.

Your timetable of September 2020 is spot on and having done a couple of Gumballs a support vehicle or two is a MUST, you will definitely be making use of it. Making use of B-roads leads to punctures.

Also, may I suggest you plan a track day somewhere in your timetable; if you don’t you will be guaranteed an accident or two. The psychology of loads of cars travelling together brings out some strange competitive urges; happens at every Gumball I have every taken part in, including one bad one in 2001. Participants knowing that a track day is coming up reduces these urges dramatically.

Make this happen guys, and Dave that “8-Ball” is genius.

Ranjan.

Was just thinking... and if it’s a silly idea then just ignore me, but what if you kind of went county to county? That could mean that everyone that’s part of the Owners Club could take part? I know that would add on a lot of miles but could maximise participants?

something i should add if i do become the support vehicle (and i am aware its early days yet...)

at todays diesel price (on my fuel card! and id have to get the limit increased!) 2k miles (there and back) will cost £991.81.... ouch
not something id be able to cover off my own back...

also id need a LOT of warning of the dates to get work to approve time off in september...

One would assume we’d all chip In for fuel if you’re the support vehicle

Maybe also some fancy ass stickers?

That's precisely the thought in my head and the basic zig zag idea. People can join along the route for any time and distance that suits them.
