Kernow Rotary Specialist wrote:That's 100% ess issues. I belive you've already changed it once? In that case it may be a wiring issue or a faulty ecu. The wiring issue seems more likely. I'd start with drag testing the ess connector pins to check pin tension. If that's acceptable I would meter from ecu to ess plug on each wire to check resistance, then shake test the loom to see if you have a partially broken wire. If the wiring tests show a problem you could run a jumper wire to the ecu and see if that clears your code. If it does, you can run more permanent jumper wires, or replace the engine loom.
I've changed the sensor twice, although it seemed secure previously before its attempt to fall off yesterday. I had resigned myself to changing the ECU or loom to clear the code but it hadn't been that pressing an issue while the car was otherwise running fine.

Do you think my new symptoms on the dash are all byproducts of it?

Hopefully the sensor stays put or it'll be helecoiling required....

Yes, if the ess signal is dropping out it will drop the rev counter to 0

Don't jump to replacing the loom just yet. Google connector drag testing. The symptoms match a loose connector. If that isn't it, running a pair of jumper wires to the ecu to test is easy, if a little involved, and the ecu pinout is readily avaliable.

Thanks James. I was already planning an ECU swap at some point just for the sake of also having to replace my keyless module and get remote locking working again, while also taking advantage of returning to stock coil dwell settings so I can fit some RRP coils. I'll have a go at testing it your way first. I do have a spare loom already in anticipation.

Hopefully I can get the car home from Milton Keynes tonight without a breakdown.

I guess I'll have to have the PZ on standby to do the annual meet weekend....
