MazdaFest 2022 - Kirkistown Circuit 28th August - CANCELLED

Post by warpc0il »

After too many years of absence, MazdaFest is back on the calender.

Organised by Irish Rotary, in conjunction with the Irish MX5 OC, at Kirkistown Circuit, County Down, NI.

We will be attending and also hosting BBQ's the evening before and after, and having many guests staying overnight.
Last time we had just over 30, staying in the house, glamping in the West Wing, and camping on the lawns.

Full details on Irish Rotary FB Group (as their forum server is still down) though feel free to ask questions or discuss here.

I've just heard that this event has had to be CANCELLED due to insufficient ticket sales before the deadline to cancel without massive penalties.

We're still trying to establish why this should be the case, given that the last two events were significantly oversubscribed.
The assumption is fuel price and general cost-of-living increases that have left people with less "fun money".

The track was cheap @£88/car for the full day, and there can't be many track days that offer free local overnight accommodation....

That is very surprising and very sad to hear.

The track price is amazingly good, so it can't have been that. I'd have been all over it, had it been a closer location! The event in past years looks to have been a fantastic day out, so I'm gutted for the community that it's not happening this year.

If possible, I would like to know why there is such a lack of interest this year, in case there are lessons for us as a club. The most likely issue is total cost, but that is just speculation, given the current cost of living crisis.

It's pretty easy to assertain why this is the case really, people simply just don't have the money to spare. The cost of living crises is hitting home.

It won't be the last event cancelled due to a lack of numbers sadly. People are being squeezed to the hilt with our beloved govts doing SFA as usual so unfortunately this will become an increasingly regular thing imo

It's not so much the track price Malcolm,it's all the costs associated with the weekend, travel.accomodation, drink, ect ect that makes it very expensive, especially now with the cost of everything gone through the roof

That is my guess too, Ian, especially with the thirst our cars have ;) .

Total cost is most likely the main reason for many, and it's easy to jump to that conclusion. However, I would like to be certain there were no other barriers this year, should any further information be forthcoming.

I had planned to go this year when I heard it was back on. But worked it out and just couldn't justify it in the new world. As others said regarding cost of living we're being squeezed, and all of the ancillary track costs have gone up too. Including tyres, fluids and brakes.

Having said that, cheap track entry at Kirkistown was a big attraction. That and a chance to meet some of the gang over there.

I used to do many track days a year. Last year I did one and this year also looks like just the one. So I have to be picky. Am happy for those who can still keep up the same frequency of track time and go all over the country, but I can't. When I can local tracks are more feasible.

I'm in the same boat Haydn. I used to do ~6-8 trackdays a year, but have only 2 booked this year; Brands in Dec (a cheap a day trip) and Blyton Park for the Annual Meet. I might manage to book a 3rd, but it would be at Snetterton, which is an easy day trip for me.
