Funny you should mention transport aircraft; after helping out a certain VIP personage (country of origin you can work out for yourself – I can neither confirm or deny) at very short notice and at considerable cost to myself (only because I knew I would accrue invaluable Brownie points), with a certain Boeing airplane problem he was having; I was given use of the below for free anytime I needed it as long as I paid for the fuel.

I have never had need of it as of yet; nice to know it there actually.

Ok, lets do the maths;

The c130 will happily take 13 RX8s in comfort if we are clever with loading which the army guys are.

For fuel conservation/payload reasons we will restrict drivers to one a car, so 13. I will make my own way there to save weight.

Right, max payload weight is 20,400kg – let’s see; 13 RX8s at about 1350kg each and 13 drivers at about 100kg each, means combined weight of 18,889kg; which is great as it leaves room for food and other sundries like spare tyres and tools. Fuel is cheap out there so do not take any.

Right, we will take off from Birmingham as it is central, so flying distance to Dubai is about 5600km. Fuel capacity of the C130 is 27,200kg, which gives it a range of 3,791km with max payload, which we will be at, and that means we will be landing at Sabiha Gokcen airport in Istanbul (this airport is a lot less crowded than Ataturk which will save time and money; I will take care of landing charges).

Luckily, because of the collapse in aviation fuel prices due to Covid Jet-A1 is now only 20cents per kg so a fill up will cost $5440 in Birmingham and $4700 in Turkey as we will still have some in the tanks. So total cost of return trip fuel is going to be $20280 (about £15700); divide that by 14 of us and that is, let us say rounded down £1120 each.

Anyone game?

Ranjan.

OMG this is so tempting. With the cost of the track day, fuel and accommodation added I guess we are somewhere between £2 & £2.5k and whilst it would be a fantastic experience I doubt I can really justify the expense as it’s effectively my years track day costs gone in one hit, but!

Dug out this photo of my wife heading to a bus/truck stop on Highway 65 to stock up on drinks and lemons from the hawkers who congregate at this stops.
This was not the camel trip but a few years earlier when we were out exploring some of the ancient sites scattered along the route.

Definitely. Put me down. Always assume me in for something that special. Provided I can take a discreet photo or two it's a tax write off for me which helps with affordability. Only a dozen more people to wrangle :lol:

If not I plan on driving the desert myself without escort. Thankfully my life is well insured. I intend to do a test run to Almeria along the Alto Velefique this summer. That's assuming I survive a solo 4X4 trip I've planned for spring over some old goat paths in the Alps. (Everyone is welcome to join of course but I plan on sleeping rough at altitude so can't promise it'll be fun!)
