I use RainSports as my daily and wet track tyres and they're great. Federals for dry days, but they can cope with a bit of wet, although not so well in the winter

I can vouch for the new Rainsport 5 as a wet/damp/cold weather tyre. They're fantabulous.
Was looking at those just now.... 235/40/18 speed rating Y is available, but only XL for whatever reason, from a quick search.

I only read good things when I read reviews on them. Very tempted. Thanks for the personal recommendation as it always carries more weight than a random web review.

Interesting you can use for a daily as well. So they work ok in the dry as well? Nice.

I'm always impressed when I see owners with Federal RSRs on their cars in the cold and wet, even on the road. Saw floppywing at bigpete's yesterday and he had them on. I also use the RSRs on day/damp track days but find their grip drops off a cliff as conditions deteriorate. I'd be terrified using them on road or track this time of year as some folks do. I had them on the car at a wet-then-damp Mallory in November last year and may as well have put Vaseline on the wheels instead of tyres. Never again for me when it's below 5 degrees outside and there's any moisture.

I had the 5s on my XF (a much heavier car) all summer. In 40 degree heat in the alps driving hard for hours they didn't fall apart or bat an eyelid. Really impressive tyres. I wouldn't use them on track in the summer, but on the road in any conditions they're ace.

+1 for the Uniroyal Rainsport 5 as a brilliant all year tyre.
Blooming good as a wet tyre on track as well.
And cheap to buy.

As per usual I'll be the slowest on track with my RE050a's unless by random chance it's dry and warm enough to test the federals out.

Fingers crossed this will be my last outing on RE050a's then I can get some rainsports 5's. Got to love buying tyres at Christmas!

Ok ummed and aahed a little as some reviews said Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are the best thing in town and others also gave glowing recommendations on the Bridgestone S001. Bridgestones were the initial recommendation on the car, and what I've always stuck with till now. However I have the Michelin Pilot 4S SUV version on my CX-5 and I find the initial turn in a bit vague. Don't get me wrong they have lots and lots of grip, especially in the wet, but it takes time to develop after you turn the wheel. Someone who is better with tyres might be able to explain it better.

So given the glowing recommendations I've ordered the Rainsport 5's in 235/40/18 and will fit them tomorrow morning, and will get an alignment done as well. I know they have the RX8 Sport suspension on record, as i did it there last time, and I think that's the recommended settings for the PZ. £85 + VAT for each tyre so seems reasonable and I am looking forward to trying these new tyres out, and they should be scrubbed in in time for Donny.

Right last things for prep, I'll order some spare brake pads and coolant, and already have plenty of oil (thanks for the advice VJ4sothername) so then I think only trackday insurance is the last thing to do before the big day, as I don't have any included in my policy. Then pray this event doesn't get cancelled due to COVID..... [-o<

I'm tossing and turning about getting some rain sport 5s as well. Need to measure the current tyres to see if I can justify it....

Oh and sort the insurance out for all my Cars. Hopefully Reis will let me have the trackday cover too.

Having been passenger with Malcolm on Rainsports (earlier version?) at Three Sisters, I can confirm that the grip is very impressive, even in standing water, and better still on a damp track.

They did tend to get a bit squirrely once hot on a fully dry track, later in the day.

Vin,

Don't use the Rainsports if it is going to be dry as they will cook themselves within two laps round Donny; they are not called Rainsports for nothing.

In that case, Vinod, I'll stick to re050as and bring the slicks. If dry you can use the re050as while I'm on the slicks. If rain we are both kinda covered. Sound like a plan?

Aah. Thought they would be ok in the cool December weather even in the dry.

Ok that's put an extra thing on the list I need to think about. Just to confirm these are ok in dry road conditions but not the track ?

Ok sounds like a plan. Thanks John.

Just in general what's the easiest way to deal with these sorts of quick changeovers? Take 2 sets of alloys to the track?
