Hi any North East owners - NE1 on here thinking of joining this new CSCC rx8 trophy series. Having watched Ben and Petes escapades in japspeed I’m looking for someone reasonably local to buddy up with on a car for this new trophy as I’m wanting to share racing and costs.

If you are interested PM me please for a chat.

Sorry - couple more questions as i think of them....

How many rounds are expected, and how many races per round?
Are all races with a pit-stop (and potential driver change)?
Any idea on entry costs?
Also, any idea on cost for the cages?

Sorry for all the questions - we were on the verge of buying a hatchback of some sort for endurance racing, but the idea of dual racing an RX8 is mighty tempting...

Evening,

There are 8 rounds (dates to be announced before November), one race per round, with 30 minutes qualifying and the 40 minute pit stop race on the same day to save time and money pressures, the race is likely to cost £385ish (split the costs if two of you). If you are keen on more tracktime you can also enter the RX8 in the CSCC Racetruck Open series at the same event; these are also a 40 minute pit stop race, with a mix of cars racing from all different ages (1950s to present day). The Open race is discounted as a 2nd race, around £225ish. 2019 prices to be announced by the Silverstone launch in November (by then our 2018 races have finished and we know how the financials for the season have finished up). Spa is a 30 minute qualifying and 2 x 40 minute races, usually priced around £650, so it's actually cheaper per race once you are out there.
The cage is £1332, fully fitted with VAT in black powder coat (colours available for a bit more), from Laser Caged Engineering in Somerset. They will set the cage kit cheaper if you have a preferred local cage fitter (welding the feet in is required, the cage then bolts down to these feet).

Hope that helps, regards, Dave

What a breath of fresh air for the RX-8 world. It will certainly produce some close racing where the drivers skills and not the power under the right foot will be the key to success.

I doubt there will be any impact on used car or parts prices as the number of vehicles involved will not be great.

I think that was Alfa Romeos plan in the '80s, at least if my AlfaSud was anything to go by - "Maintain the power:weight ratio by having more bits of the body rust away as the engine gets tired" [-X

Unfortunately, some RX8s seem to be following the same principle, when you look at the sills

I know very much from experience this is not the case....

When I used to work on MGs in my uni days any sill work would invariable leave the car several pounds lighter as the rot weighed significantly more than new metal!!

Not sure if it was Dave, but I was approached by someone at Donnington who was in involved with this project and had a quick chat.

For parity the each car needs to be sat on the same dyno with the room fuse pulled as this drops the ECU into the better map then sealed with wire and marked lead weights/ engine / ECU and OBD port.

As I pointed out, so many of these cars have been ported the car could be bought with the new owner not even knowing he had a ported engine.

Looking at the rules the only thing I would strongly is a set of Eibach springs and as an official Eibach dealer I could talk to Eibach to see if I could get a discount for each racer. I do this with the MX-5 Super Cup Series which we sponsor.

Reason for the Eibach Springs, yes the car will handle better, but if you have ever seen an RX-8 with the interior stripped you could walk under the wheel arches because with all that weight out the car goes up in the air.

Some will remember the RX-8 that turned up for a track day at Oulton Park with just the drivers seat and we ribbed him all day about his tractor looking RX-8, so we wouldn't want these new to the track RX-8's turning up not looking like race cars would we ;)

I'll be following this with interest, although the missus might kill me if I were to purchase a 2nd RX8 for racing!

Me too - I have 3RX8s already including a racing one but its over spec for this opportunity. I am looking for somebody to bloody with for the series as you can have two drivers. Happy to share 50% of all costs and efforts!

But you could still race your existing race RX8 in the CSCCs "New Millenium" Series and be on the grid at the same time, but you would just be in one of the mixed classes and not the RX8 Trophy Class.

Yup, but you'd be in the 3 litre class. A modest BMW E46 330i would be 50bhp up on you.

I did a single New Millennium race back in 2015. Good mix of cars but you'd need a well tuned RX8 to be competitive.

I was lucky it was a wet race :)

It would probably help in finding a partner if you put your location in your profile ;)
Do you have a trailer and tow vehicle ?

What wheels are recommended for japspeed / time attack - I have a R3 and want to buy some lightweight wheels? 17” or 18” for R3 for racing - what types ?

If you want wheels for serious racing then focussing on "light" isn't necessarily the best. Racing wheels take a lot of abuse, and you really don't want your wheels failing at 120mph.....

I use Team Dynamics 18". They are very strong, and light enough. Also consider that lap time isn't just about making stuff light. There are loads of slow cars that don't weigh much. If your wheels leave you with a poor tyre choice and small brakes then you will go slower.

Ps. If you entered your car in Time Attack then you'd be in Club class, because your car is Bridgeported. Unfortunately any RX-8 would be outclassed in Club, because that class is full of turbos.

Same with 750MC regs. Bridgeport will put you in Class B which is 240bhp/ton @flywheel. That's a lot to ask of a N/A Renesis
