Slicks

Post by Jimbob35 »

Hi all. I’m looking at going full track toy as it didn’t sell. Ares slicks allowed on track days without major changes to other areas of the car?

It depends on the operator , most say you need a cage to use them . I have used them without a cage and never questioned .

Most operators require a roll cage. Some are very strict, due to insurance requirements, and won't let you out on slicks. Beware also that the higher g on slicks may lead to oil surge. If you don't have extra baffling in your sump this can lead to problems as the pickup isn't good on sustained high g cornering.

As Wayne said it depends on operator ive used the Westy on slicks at Combe with MSE and Slip n Grip and Combe own days but the action days..JDM Forge Spring etc Action days they are not allowed...
The Westy rx8 powered on slicks has killed 2 engines with unheard off Rotor bearing failure ...i now have gated sump fully synthetic oil and engine 3 is on 1850 miles...oil has just been dropped oil filter cut open magnet swished about in oil and no swarf....
I say get on the slicks and have fun but baffle the sump.

Lol, not sure what to say really, i know what i meant...
Ok, put a baffle plate inbetween the sump and engine or..buy a gated sump.
That is sump with gates inside not a sump and a garden gate...
I think most of the specialists can supply a baffle. Tim at RX motors done mine.

"Baffled sump" is the correct term, I just remembered we had the emoji that I don't get to use much :thumleft:

I’ve baffled my sump and never had any issues , I also had slicks on my car at JDM last year and they didn’t say a word .
It’s a gamble I guess , what compound slicks are you intending running ?
I use the Michelin , S9H I found the best , most used ones are S8L these days , I think they are softer and don’t last as well , and loose a bit of grip after say 15 -20 mins

I'm on slicks too, love them. I have the Essex rotary baffle plate in, with a Greedy sump, series 2 fuel pump head, no issues noticed.

Had to fit a cage though to use them on the trackday operators which i usually use (BookATrack, Javelin, Circuitdays)

I've been to a trackday when a novice turned up with all the gear and not idea, including a set of slicks on his Lotus Elise.

He was making a hash of things all morning and nearly took out a couple of other drivers, locking-up in the braking zones.

Over lunch he was told by the organisers that he either went round with an instructor or not at all.

He came back after only a couple of laps with the instructor and swapped wheels with another Elise in the paddock.

Going out again with the instructors and road legal "track day" tyres he was much smoother and soon much quicker.

I had a chat with the instructor later and it seems that the novice driver wasn't able to get the slicks up to a working temperature and therefore, even on the dry track, wasn't getting nearly as much (or consistent) grip as with the threaded trackday tyres.

This would have been in the late '90s (the Elise hadn't been out long) and I don't know what slicks he had fitted, but it does (did) imply that slicks aren't the answer of all drivers.

I love em on the Westy, thinking of going Slicks for FD now R888R...aint all that give me R888 back. Lost 2 secs a lap compared to last year.
Defo need a lap to get some heat in its a tightrope walk first lap..

threaded trackday tyres.
:!: :?:

Do you fit the right-hand thread to the right hand side of the car, and left-hand thread to the left hand side?

My Alfa has left-hand-threaded wheel nuts on the left and "normal" wheel nuts on the right, which confuses the hell out of tyre fitters.

Howvere, in this case I'm playing the dyslexia card.

im seriously considering semi slicks on on second set of wheels for my next trackday, after comprehensively cooking a set of continental sport contacts at jdm coombe... even for a novice like me, road tyres dont cut it.... :D

You’ll see a huge difference , I use R888’s and have had a few trackdays out of them , a big improvement on most road tyres
