Mazda Sprint Series (Javelin) - Half Price Rounds

Post by benedwards64 » Mon Sep 18, 2017 6:07 pm

Hi guys,

First of all, I'm not affiliated in any way with Javelin.

They currently run the Mazda Sprint Series alongside the Toyota Sprint Series. Awareness seems to be pretty low, and this year (its first) has been almost entirely MX5s.

Javelin are offering half price entry for new sprinters at the remaining two rounds this year. Unfortunately I'm unable to attend, but my friend and I competed at Anglesey in the RX8 a few weeks ago as a change to the usual Javelin Sprint Series we do.

Imagemss by Ben Edwards, on Flickr

If anyone is thinking of a little sprinting it's a really good entry into the sport, and at ~£70 a round for 8 timed runs it's a bit of a bargain too.

Have a look at www.mazdasprint.com for the regulations and details. No MSA licence or expensive gear necessary, you can rock up in a totally bone stock car and have a go if you want - it's very much grass-roots motorsport and a huge amount of fun to boot.

As I said, I'm not affiliated in any way and apologies if this clashes with anything organised by the club, but I'd very much like to see the series take off. The chances are I'll be doing the majority of these rounds next year, and if there's more RX8 interest we can look to get some clearer classes in place.

Oh I'm seriously tempted by the Snetterton day....... A sort of post-season swansong.

I think I would fail the noise test though, and I'm not sure I want the hassle of making it quieter..... :-k

Tempting though.

Noise test is 102 I think? TBH compared to some of the Toyota machinery that turns up I doubt you'd have a problem.

Sorry, I meant to jump in here last week and give this a bump - I see the first date has already passed #-o

But the Snetterton event is still available on Sat 21st October. With a half price offer, it's a fantastic opportunity to have a go at Sprinting to see if you like it. I've been to a few events now and it's great fun. The only downside, if you are used to Open Pit Lane trackdays, is the time waiting between sprint runs. However, the competition element, in my opinion, makes for a great day out.

I'll post up the event in the Trackdays section in the hope of raising the profile.

I can't yet commit to that date, but will go if there are still places available when I can commit :thumleft:

The events are due to go on sale in mid-january when the calendar is officially confirmed but in the mean time you can expect a fairly big announcement on the 28th of December all being well.

I'll be doing most of these next year I suspect. Would be really great if we weren't the only RX8 again... ;)

Right, come on you lot - Round 1 @ Cadwell is open, and there are even RX8 specific classes this time! Anyone fancy having a go? It's probably the cheapest entry into competitive motorsport, and there's even a class for stock RX8s so you don't need to worry about having all the track bling ;)

Plus, the Mazda series is running as part of the overall Japanese Sprint Series, so you'll get to show the odd GT86 a thing or two ;)

Hi Wayne

There are basically two series:

1) Javelin Sprint Series - a general series for all makes, which is mostly where I competed last year

2) Japanese Sprint Series - this is new this year. It is run by Javelin and takes on the same format, but is an amalgamation of what used to be the Toyota, Mazda and Subaru serieseseses.

Each series has it's own set of classes but you're also competing for the overall Japanese Sprint Series position, so there's potential for double prizes :D . Cost per round is exactly the same.

I'll most likely be doing the Jap (Mazda) series this year as Javelin is looking busy, but I've booked the first round of each because I'm greedy

It's a multiplier, so the RX8's 1300cc counts as 1950cc. Essentially in amongst the Clio sports, Civic Type Rs etc. I'm running in class J9 this year.

Yep. Stock car = J10, standard track car mods (suspension, track tyres, some weight removal but still essentially road legal) = J9, hella track special = J8. Obviously forced induction/triple rotor etc would put you up classes again. PM me if you need anything clarifying Image

All going well should be turbo so I guess that’ll notch up a few more classes up . Will probably be around 280 - 290 at flywheel

Thanks for banging the drum on this Ben. I'm sure they'll only keep the RX8 category next time if owners actually attend.

I'm going to do my first trackdays in this car in March and May. If I feel confident that I know it's limits in time then I'll join the season from Kendrew onwards. Otherwise I'll join next season assuming it's running again. It's good to still see competitive racing with such a low cost and little red tape.

Would be nice to benefit from having a RX8 that qualifies as stock/standard for once. They seem rare. Winning a class by default as the only entrant would be funny... and take off some pressure!

No probs. Still plenty of competition if you're on your own in class - you can battle for overall position (and go chasing MX5s/GT86s) :D

I am up for thisssss!

I used to compete for 2 seasons in the Toyota Sprint Series that runs along side with this so will be ace to catch up with some old friends.

I would imagine I will be at Wigan Three Sisters and maybe Anglesey, Kendrew or Blyton....

Looking forward to these :)

Round one of the inaugural Japanese Sprint Series is swiftly approaching - Cadwell Park, Saturday 7th April. There are 54 entrants so far, but it looks like we're still the only RX8 signed up! Anyone else fancy embarrassing some GT86s with us? :D

Best of luck Ben! Two track days since Feb have shown that neither me or the car are ready to compete yet. Got some work to do. Still hoping to join in the stock class one of the later rounds though, probably Kendrew or Snetterton.
