Club Activity Day - North Weald **Mon 14th July**

Post by GreySilver Beast » Tue Jan 21, 2014 3:58 pm

Ok boys & girls I have arranged a Club Activity Day through Car Limits for all of us to enjoy :P

As per usual it will be first 20 names down on the list, then Reserves and Marshall's,Photographers etc..........

The Cost will be £55.00 & will be payable to my PayPal Account and make it a gift so no fees are incurred & when you send the money could you annotate it with your forum name so I know who's paid :!:

Below is some useful information from Car Limits about timings and directions etc.........

North Weald Activity Day
Merlin Way
North Weald
Essex

If using Sat Nav, we haven't supplied the postcode as it takes you to the wrong place! Please get off M11 at Junction 7 and just follow the signs to 'North Weald Market'.

DIRECTIONS
North Weald Airfield is off Junction 7 on the M11. Follow the signs for North Weald Market and this will take you straight to the airfield. There will be only 1 gate open on the day, next to the Air Traffic Control Tower. The person on the gate will direct you to where you will need to be.

You will need to bring your driving license with you on the day. There are food facilities located on the airfield. The day will begin at 9.00am and finish at approximately 4.00pm. Spectators are allowed onto the airfield but there are no facilities for them to sit and watch.

Please note that as your vehicle will be cornering at speed, you may need to inflate your tyres more than you would normally. Vehicles such as the Lotus Elise, Caterham etc are usually ok as they are lightweight and designed for high speed cornering, but cars such as Subaru Imprezas, Porsches, Mazdas, TVRs etc are recommended to inflate their tyres to the maximum stated on the tyre itself to protect the side wall of the tyre. There is a garage just off the M11 roundabout (on the A414 towards Harlow) where you can do this before the event. We usually have a tyre pressure gauge so that you can decrease the tyres before your journey home :!:

LEARNING THE CIRCUIT
The circuit we will use is shown in our Car Limits game – why not have a play to help you learn where you need to go on the day. Don’t worry, they’ve used a bit of ‘artistic license’ we don’t really have helicopters and people to mow down on the circuit!

http://www.carlimits.com/game/

ITINERARY
09.00am
Meet on the airfield. Once most people have arrived there will be a briefing by the instructor.

9.30am - 4.00pm
A large group day with the following activities;
High speed bend.
Small circuit.
Medium Circuit
Sprint Circuit included weather/time permitting

Lunch will be at the restaurant, at around 12:00pm.

http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/thekingsheadnorthweald/

Address:
Kings Head,High Road, North Weald, Epping, CM16 6BU
Wings Cafe,Airfield,North Weald,Epping - 07583857445

Just to add for those who haven't been before,we do stop for lunch (not included in the price) and go down the local pub food is very good and a reasonable price, but you don't have to come.
Also you will be throwing your car about so loose objects are best removed. They normally let you store some of stuff in there trailer, but this Is not a cert.
You may wear your tyres a lot, depending on how you drive,so make sure you have enough tread to get home. There is plenty of advice available from those who have been before so please don't be afraid to ask.
A must for the hi-speed bend and (ideally) for the other circuits, you need to run your tyres at much higher pressure than normal ~45psi for a RX-8 & this is because there's no chance for them to warm-up to normal operating temperatures plus the cornering forces round the hi-speed bend would be sufficient to pull a normally inflated cold tyre off the rim.
Anyway your first task when you arrive will be to get the inflater out and start pumping

Interested - do you know the cost?
He he - I think we should make this a "crap tyre special" day - I can bring my Cheapo Chinese rubber and we should specifically demo how sh*t & dangerous they are (but fun in a controlled environment like NW!)

Is it acceptable to swap wheels over up there and leave the good set stacked somewhere? Does anyone else do this?

The sentence "You may wear your tyres a lot, depending on how you drive, so make sure you have enough tread to get home" and knowing how I will want to drive suggests my crap tyres won't be legal for the journey home (not that they should be legal in the first place)

You can swap wheels there Phil, I normally put my crap set (road legal) on for the day and carry 2 of my normal set just in case, although I've never had to fit them at the end of the day to get me home. If anyone should damage a tyre and need something to get them home then I can provide, well up to 4 wheels anyway :D

I'll sign up once the dates are clear, might just go for photo fun instead.

RE tyres, the North Weald surface is pretty bumpy and if you spin/drift a lot it can cause lateral tears in the tyre surface. A few people (suspension altered possibly) have also rubbed inner shoulders down to legal limit when they didn't put extra air in the tyres. I however did one day without any significant tyre wear by not being a hooligan. The following year I had spare rims, so switched to old rubber on the day and drove more belligerently. I might do that again this year, although the old tyres are look pretty damn sorry now.

In the times I've been there I have suffered no noticeable tyre wear or damage ... I don't tend to drift as much as many might choose to of course.

Just a quick update

Need to ask all of you how you all are on having the Car Activity Day on a week day in July :?:

The only week days are Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday & Friday.....

All the Sunday's in June & July are booked up & Car Limits are not allowed to have functions in August at North Weald :( ,otherwise it looks like it will be in September & can throw some more dates at them tomorrow when I give them a ring :P

Look forward to your comments.................... =D>

I'll go with the majority decision, as long as I get enough warning I should be able to get the time off.

I will also go with the majority decision as I can do any day of the week, but clearly weekends are likely to be best for most people.

I'd be interested and I'm sure Soph would as well, can you add us to the list please Nigel? As for dates, weekend would be best but given notice we can book the day off easily enough. Is there usually an additional cost for a weekend session?

I assumed it would be a week day as if it is a weekend I need to obtain a "pass"
