Chris, as you're no longer having the 8 mapped, would there be any objection to me arriving a couple of hours later?

also for my and everyone else's reference the coordinates of pips place are 53.27050537748216, -2.487273090789767

I will be having power runs done on the M3 so that will take your 13:00 slot but if you can do 14:30 M5&6 permitting, that should work OK.

Online briefing completed.
Weather looks like showers and 9 degrees max temp
Getting breezy so may help drying track hopefully.
Looking forward to it.😁

<<<TRACKDAY Oulton Park - Friday 26th November SOLD OUT>>>

Post by MightyCondor »

Fun day today and certainty eventful.

First off, massive thanks to James for generously letting me share his car and giving me the opportunity to finally drive this excellent technical track.

As predicted, I now want my own stripped out track car, although maybe one that's not quite as loud, and with the seats slightly further back, and a starter motor that's attached correctly Image

As wet days go, it was a lot of fun, with the added challenge of not having ideal rubber. Having started on federals before moving to mismatched road tyres that gave us a planted rear, but little front grip. There were various moments of understeer, long stopping distances to full ABS and DSC paddies. All those bumpy braking zones could really upset the car. May not have been especially quick today, but it was a great challenge.

Given the amount of spins that happened around me, I'm happy that I kept it on the tarmac. Didn't really fancy buying James a new car Image

I've got the combined video footage, so have promised to do the editing. Videos will follow. In terms of comparison, it's kind of hard given the track conditions kept changing, but a quick look at the Racebox data suggests that we each had sections that we were respectively stronger through and the lap times were close, with the exception of my final session where the track was drying, resulting in me going 10s quicker. I imagine a sub 2.20 would have been on the cards with one more session a bit later.

Well the weather was as expected yesterday and made for tricky conditions. Parts of the track dried up and other parts didn't so it was a bit unpredictable.
First mistake was not filling up before arriving at the track like I usually have done at every other track day I've done..! It was peeing it down so I thought it's not worth it as I won't be hammering it enough and I will have enough fuel to last me.
Had plenty of sessions in the morning which were mostly wet and raining at some point.
Afternoon came and as it went on it dried up a bit as the wind picked up. Decided I would have two more sessions before setting off home. So out we went again for our penultimate session and was having a great duel with another mx5 which was evenly matched. Lap after lap went by and I totally forgot to even check the fuel gauge...! Doh...! A few splutters and I wondered what was up. Eased off and thought I better try and get back to the pits. No such luck as it chugged to a halt near lodge corner I think it was. Thought I had killed it to be honest. Along came tow truck to haul us off. It's only When it ground to a halt I realised the fuel gauge was on zero.
Back in car park found on site fuel was closed an hour before. Managed to find a guy packing up who had 20 litres to spare so bought it off him and hey presto it's not dead...! We can get home. Did think about doing the last session but maybe it's an omen, and even my son saw sense and advised us to leave it at that. So our day was done.
Still enjoyed it despite the weather and back safe and sound.😁

just got home now..

left oulton park just after 5pm last night and made my way south. was getting 17mpg out of the lorry at 50mph which is unprecedented, certainly helps when the wheels are pointing in the same direction! that soon plummeted though as by Cheltenham I was running into a strong headwind.

parked up in a layby outside where I keep my lorry at 1am and went to bed, to be rocked to sleep by the wind!

put the lorry away at 7am (using ferry mode so I can split my daily rest as i was again out of working hours but had a couple of driving hours left) and nervously drove home to inspect whether my lean to had survived the storm, which it had, no problems.. plenty of trees down though!

yesterday was excellent. we started on the federals and that was soon decided to be a bad idea, it was just too cold. without being able to get any heat into the tyres they where just not having it. I switched to the road tyres as I haven't gotten the money together for a set of rain sports yet, and even with the relatively cheap rubber on the front it was much better. once the fronts started to warm up the understeer started to go away and the back started stepping out on corner exit instead. all was going fine until I went to go out for the last session before lunch and it wouldn't start. it turns out the nut to the main power feed to the starter had backed off and eventually fallen off and after all morning on track managed to pull the solenoid plug off so that was a easy fix.

back out after lunch for a uneventful afternoon (with a couple of red flags and me waiting nervously for my car to reappear  ) until about 4pm when right when I was planning on coming back in to hand the car over, a misfire appeared at 8k rpm. I bought it in and found the misfire was evident when free revving in the pits, but a quick ignition cycle and it appeared to go away. Alan took the car back out almost immediately with no issues until after about 20 mins when the misfire re-appeared, and on the cool down lap it got worse and got down to about 6k rpm.

after much consulting and thoughts it is almost certainly the plugs, possibly coils though that seems unlikely.

so all in all, a very good day :D and the car survived  :biggreen:

Errrrm... I'm not sure you have mistaken us for someone else.
I saw you in the garages a few times when mooching about but you were in deep conversation with people and I'm not one for interrupting so never approached you. I have spoken with you at the three sisters track previously when you had the orange rx8 but that was a while back.
Anyway I did set off one car back from you in one session and I was going to try and keep up with you but the car in front was all over the place and I didn't get past it in time to have a go...! You then pulled a fair distance away before coming off track for a break. I did have the pleasure of listening to your car blasting down the start finish line and I have to say it sounded fantastic.
The lap times you posted up looked great and I was a fair bit behind them times to be honest, but having my fuel issues as it dried and not pushing my luck any further meant it was game over for us.
I'm sure we will catch up at another track day soon but until then it's back to the three word drivel we normally speak....on here....! "Fuel is useful".......

<<<TRACKDAY Oulton Park - Friday 26th November SOLD OUT>>>

Post by GreySilver Beast »

What a fantastic wet day we all had around the track circuit today =D> =D> =D> =D>

This was my third outing at Oulton Park, but the first time in the wet, which was quite entertaining before it started drying up in the afternoon

Only went off the track once in the morning  and just remembered what NickD told me to do =D> , just lift off and let the car slow down on it's own accord and just tap the foot brake a few times to help slow the car down on wet grass :P

Once the car had stopped moving was then able to drive off the grass and mud to rejoin the track, oh gave the Marshall a little wave when I drove past and he waved back to me

Great seeing everyone as per-usall with plenty of laughs in the process :thumleft:
