***TRACKDAY Snetterton - Wednesday 17th June SOLD OUT***

I've booked this with MSVT. I think bigpete is booked too. In case anyone else wants to join, at the time of posting this there are still garages available. https://www.msvtrackdays.com/car/calendar/2020/june/17-sn/ There are new guidelines (attached to this post) regarding social distancing to be a...

Re: OBD II – the latest tech?

Yep. For a decent one that works with iOS you have to pay more, the MX+. But that's the point of buying Apple innit. (I'm only sore because my business partner insisted we buy a new Mac Pro for £26k this year, when I could have built a faster, better designed PC for £4k. All that money we could have...

Re: Only 629 RX-8 R3's Left !!

Flipping eck, that is low. Its weird to think that R3s are disappearing every month. Pete showed me photos of a black R3 that had been in a massive side collision, probably with a lorry... or a tank from the amount of damage. The entire passenger side was just pancaked (and I hope miraculously those...

Re: Thanks - I own an RX8 R3 now (and questions about gearbox/clutch)

:whathesaid: It's normal when cold for the gearbox to be really stiff and unpleasant. It can take longer than you might expect to warm up too depending what driving is being done. Good to hear that the longer drive helped a bit. I wonder if what it needed was a long, hot drive to properly re-lube al...

Re: Exhaust audio wireless test capture

Yeah that's right. I use Abobe Audition for audio post. The only change I'd made to the above audio before posting it here was to normalise the audio to about 80%, so the original recording peaked even louder. For sale most customers will want a deeper sounding exhaust with more growl so I'll do tha...

Re: Exhaust audio wireless test capture

A video of how you did this, including the benefits of wired connection etc, along with the results, would be great for the rx8oc YouTube channel. Good idea. I'll see what I can film of that in the garage and shed. Otherwise I'll get on it when the lockdown ends. I have to be discreet when I go out...

Exhaust audio and GoPro tests

I've captured some test audio from my exhaust. Some cruising, and some pulls from 0-60, and 30-60. Nothing faster and no stationary revving... as the car draws enough attention round here. For anyone who wants to hear it the audio is here, download it for the best quality: https://www.dropbox.com/s/...

Re: Thanks - I own an RX8 R3 now (and questions about gearbox/clutch)

I've been told that the RPM difference is precisely why the gearbox (usually) lasts longer on the MX5. I also think it's reasonable to assume that RX8 gearboxes are, in general, likely to be abused more than MX5 ones. I certainly know of plenty of MX5 gearboxes to fail though. The 'bulletproof MX5' ...

Re: Massive backfire

While you're doing the MAF and poking around where Warc0il said, if you haven't already done it it's worth taking off everything there up to and including the throttle body and cleaning it all out. While you're there you can check the throttle body is opening smoothly. Good call on getting the CRC S...

Very nice! Good to hear a side by side comparison. I highly recommend this mount, it's what I use and is sturdy even at speed:

Re: Test footage of REVL cam on the 8

I've just bought a GoPro Hero 8 Black, so I'll redo it when that arrives and see how that compares! I have 'film' cameras from work but they cost a lot of money so I don't fancy sticking them to the bodywork, hence digging out the action cam stock. My issues with the footage: 1. The gimbal inside th...

Test footage of REVL cam on the 8

Very rough cut of test footage of the REVL gimbal cam on my R3. I wanted b-roll footage for the club YouTube channel. Was a failure. That's the first and last time I'll use the camera.

Footage below if anyone is curious:

Yeah, got to be very careful with that stuff. I have some overspray on my house brickwork that'll never come off.

Expanding foam which can be sanded and painted :?: Good idea. Would need to be closed cell so that it doesn't rot. I use Soudal for outdoor work: https://www.screwfix.com/p/soudal-gap-filling-foam-hand-held-750ml/46137 ae235.jpg Never used it on a car part though. I wonder if pouring in a very thin...

Re: Thanks - I own an RX8 R3 now (and questions about gearbox/clutch)

I doubt you'll find a perfect used R3 box without any notchiness, but good on you if you get lucky. Used ones do come up but you might need to be patient and then pounce when one does appear. Availability (lack of) and price difference were the reasons I went for a S1 replacement. If you do get a re...

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????

Super easy on our XF too. Just pop off the engine cover and it sits on top of the block. Lovely and easy with loads of hand room. The oil is designed to be drained out the top as well. I've never had to get under the car! =D> :yeah: My nieces 04 Focus diesel is easy too. It's underneath right behind...

Just to update. Have a replacement alternator from bigpete (he seems to have every part whenever I ask :thumleft:) and it's fitted on the car.

Only done a bit of driving since but as of yet the noise hasn't returned. So fingers crossed that's it. [-o<

Re: Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I still lament that my RX8 didn't come with the Mazda tyre inflator. It didn't come with an owners manual either but I managed to get one from bigpete just before the lockdown... only took 3 years to find one! Just to give a conclusion; I've bought the DeWalt DCC018N infl...

Re: Racing Beat US vs UK prices

RB Europe has to source and include an extra set of mounting brackets, as the crash structure of US cars is a different shape to UK/European, so the RB US brackets don't fit our cars. The packet containing the mounting brackets and screws had been placed inside the scoop prior to mine being shipped...

Re: Racing Beat US vs UK prices

Ooooooh, thorny subject. Good on you for raising it though. They are separate companies as far as I'm aware. Who knows what extra costs the Europe brand has. Unlike Apple which is basically the Borg. I bought the Revi ram air duct new then learned my lesson and stopped there. £257 (ish... was 18 mon...

Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?

My second Ring 'Heavy Duty' air compressor has failed in less than a couple of months. The first one lasted a year then ate itself, this last one looks to have shipped with a wiring fault and keeps blowing fuses in both my cars. Those kind of portable 12V compressors never seem to last long with me....
