Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Not a hugely exciting update after Pete’s epic weekend of sprinting success, but we did manage to get up to Donington last weekend for a trackday. It was a good opportunity to test out a few things – firstly, to see if my new (to me!) tow-car could realistically look after us for a weekend away! For...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

So I've been off on holiday for a couple of weeks (it's a hard life...) but Pete's been busy in the meantime. Another copy & paste from another forum below... :) Due to Ben living in the wrong part of the country and then buggering off on holiday, i thought i should do a little update where the car ...

Re: RX8 Trophy, new racing class for 2019

Sorry - couple more questions as i think of them.... How many rounds are expected, and how many races per round? Are all races with a pit-stop (and potential driver change)? Any idea on entry costs? Also, any idea on cost for the cages? Sorry for all the questions - we were on the verge of buying a...

Re: RX8 Trophy, new racing class for 2019

Hi Ben, No, not yet, at this point in the racing season time is at a premium, but given another few weeks they will be out. Essentially it's strip the carpet, headlining, airbags, seats and belts out (leave the door cards, centre tunnel and dash alone). Roll cage, FIA seat, harness, cut out and ext...

Re: Smooth Track Driving

There's a better vid of Johnny from fifth gear with a guy ( sorry I don't know who he is but he's taught alot of F1 drivers, foxy haired old chap) but he's brilliant. He knocked a full eleven seconds off Johnny's lap after only an hour or so of teaching and said after a couple of days he could get ...

Engine fan query

Afternoon all Quick question - when the engine fans kick in, do they both kick in at the same time or is one just for air-con? Should have checked the operation before we pulled the old rad out  We're putting in an aftermarket rad and Spal fan, so trying to work out which we need to wire into. ...

Re: Liam's race car project

I'm also tempted to increase the rev limit before the rolling road session. I would. (I did!). Mine's set to 10.2k. I change at 9.5k, but take it to 10.0k if I need to. For instance, to approach to Croft hairpin takes me to 10k, but changing to third would be slower. Mine wasn't lightened or balanc...

Thanks! Appreciate that :)

I always felt like I was losing speed coming out of Tower, going in too hot... and I missed the final hairpin braking too late

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

So, Croft! As said, first time we’d driven it in the RX8 and I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s another fast circuit with lots of time to be made (and lost!) in the bravery stakes. I’d managed to mix up my weekends somehow, but through some serendipitous events was due to be visiting in-law family i...

Re: Basic track day prep advice please

Never driven Brands, much to my shame! Bedford is a good first track though, loads of space and plenty of run off. Just spend some time on YouTube before you go, it's a long track to learn otherwise.

Re: Basic track day prep advice please

Yep, Bedford's a long track so really you'll want an out lap, one (max two) flying laps and an in lap. It's not *too* hard on brakes but there are a couple of hard stops (such as the hairpin at the end of the back straight) where you'll find out very quickly if your brakes are too hot

Re: Track car diet - remove crash bar?

Thanks Pete, that's a useful thought. We have a half cage at present which mounts near the strut towers at the rear, but obviously not near the front. Last time we did this was on an MR2 which is naturally very stiff (it has 5 bulkheads FFS!)

Re: Track car diet - remove crash bar?

Thanks Dan. Nothing we can't fix with cable-ties I imagine - it's already had a pretty heavy shunt, hence the multi-coloured front :D

Track car diet - remove crash bar?

Just thinking about the next winter diet, has anyone with a track RX8 tried removing the front & rear crash bars? Any loss in rigidity etc or are they literally just dead weight at either end of the car?

It's safe to say that the car will never be returned to the road at this point...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

I'll puit some more details up when I have the pics through, but for now here's the vid from our last sprint at Croft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMoWV9mOU-w&feature=youtu.be 14th and 16th overall IIRC. Camera is now mounted on the nose, about 6 inches from the air intake, which makes some pret...
