Re: Pauline's '99 Skoda Octavia SLX 1.8 20V
I just happened to look down below the reservoir, as I was refitting the cap, and noticed the vacuum pipe connected to the power assistance servo. Now, one of the first things I'd done before I taken anything apart was to perform a static servo function test. Foot on the brake pedal, with engine off...

. . . . . . NO BRAKES    Seriously, rolling back down the drive out of the garage and didn't have enough brakes to hold the car against the incline and the transmission creep in reverse. :? Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
We replaced the missing
undertray on the Skoda this morning and I have to admit it was a doddle with the lift, whereas it would have been a total pain without.
Please don't look at that subframe

Re: Gearbox issue or not ?
Driver side = okay
Passenger side = failed
It's common for the right side to fail first due to the heat from the exhaust manifold.

Re: Electric water pump
There's no free lunch.
The reduction in parasitic drag from the water pump has got to be replaced by a similar increase in drag from the alternator, to power the pump, unless you're also going to install a dedicated battery system that's charged off-line.

Re: Lighter wheels or coilovers for better body/wheel control and damping?
I justified my aftermarket wheels on the basis that; - I liked them - they're a brand I know and trust (Dotz Touge) - they were (silly) cheap on Gumtree - they're heavier than oem but lighter than OEM wheels with 23mm spacers, though the offset created the same effect. 20180703_105052.jpg Currently ...

Re: Lighter wheels or coilovers for better body/wheel control and damping?
Again, you need to be careful choosing a Big Brake Kit, as most* are significantly heavier than the OEM brakes, and are more about posing than performance. There are some BBK's that are lighter than OEM, but few of them include dust boots and other considerations that you'd apply to a road car. Some...

Re: It seemed like a good idea at the time...
Having had to do an emergency procedure on our 22 year old Skoda, as the first car up on our lift, I can confirm that the perspective on rust is scary.
"The 8 doesn't get to go up until the walls are sorted" - apparently
So I won't know just how bad she is for a while.

Re: 231 alternator
FYI all the alternators are the same, 192/231/R3, as in "interchangeable".
However, there was a production design change after VIN SE17**-141787, so one from a donor car with a VIN after that should be more reliable.

Re: Steel wheels
Might be easier with (most) JDM imports, as the front discs are smaller and they only came with 16" alloys as standard.
