Ahhh the long lost innocence of youth.......that be one of the first singles I ever purchased.
If only I’d listened to the Central Scrutinizer’s warnings.

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

rx_sjo Was just probing the OEM loom connectors and hadn't expected to need an additional safety measures\was not doing anything I normally consider a risk. Bit of a mystery and not sure exactly what went wrong; Maybe I somehow inserted one of the connectors incorrectly, although that does seem phys...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Damn, just when things were starting to progress....... I was trying to attach my dodgy old scope to the display back-light, to see what sort of signal was delivered, and somehow the magic smoke has escaped  For those that don’t know magic smoke is actually how electronics works, although some...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Ahh Man, my diagnostics\assessment has never been as detailed as this, excellent work. 9600 is probably very forgiving for the mode state changes and with it being so slow I doubt they needed to include any delay to allow for ram write times - poor display driver would have been bored to tears waiti...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Great find HwAoRrDk Legot(rx8club) flagged pin 'H' as 0.5v in this post https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/my-invention-best-boost-can-gauge-ever-oem-red-lcd-display-195323/page13/ and I just assumed it was ground - I make a lot of 'ungrounded' assumptions  Slash128 later traced ...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

rx_sjo Appreciate your offer, as it's well outside my sphere of experience. Have a few remaining decisions to make regarding form\function, then will need to decide how best to proceed. Still cabling and case options to consider; and while I was thinking about something else I realized the mirror ba...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

I haven't kept the data captures so don't have a reference to check, but I am pretty sure I decoded the head SPI data at 9600. I did initially think it was 4800 (same as the AC amp serial) but that was very early in my learning curve (cliff). https://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Slightly off topic question Does anyone find it an unbearable hardship to have to reset the clock every time you disconnect your battery? I am weighing the increased cost and complexity of a solution with battery backup, verses the actual real-world impact; As the intended move to a processor with b...

Nice,
I do like that gauge\indicator, it's a great idea\layout.
I wonder how the OEM display\head deals with your CD scenario - perhaps someone has a disk that meets the requirements to reproduce.

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

I do recall finding the sensor under the front bumper somewhere and hitting it with a hair-drier during some random test, so if no one has a definitive answer (or a drive in cool store) a carefully directed can of rapid freeze may solve this little mystery. I would be surprised if the amb circuitry ...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Good spotting HwAoRrDk, Now that you mention it I do recall encountering issue 1a, but didn't validate\update the doc's Also issue 1b is definitely me not thinking\understanding how SPI works, the SPI speed is meant to be the MAX speed for the connection and so should be 1Meg; I did actually have an...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

qwakers, One of the reasons I ran out of pins in my current 'test' board was addition of a bluetooth connection, I hadn't intended to use it for hands-free, but the underpinning ethos is an arduino based hardware solution that gives people easy to use 'options' Sadly I can't currently make this prio...

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

I'd be happy to help with rewriting the display control detail and perhaps others could chip in\peer review - especially for the bits I've guessed :?
Not pointing the finger, but it took HwAoRrDk only a few minutes to find a major flaw in my original assessment.

Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Nice work HwAoRrDk, and a well timed update. After seeing your speed sensitive wipers I have become (re)enthused and was recently contemplating a display library\set of scroll functions; IE left or right scroll, scroll delay, configurable spacing between text\strings, displaying 1 (current) string t...

Re: Display weirdness

You could also try unplugging\replugging the display connector at the stereo (try it first) or the display (has plastic retainers that can snap).
I have seen a similar a pattern generated on the display when the 5 volt supply to the display controller is lost.

I’m inclined to think connections\power, but all my testing has been with a head unit so I don't have a definitive answer. - Picking up an 8v regulator and hardwiring is on my list of things to do. The post that supplied the wiring detail doesn't make it clear how the measurements were taken. These ...

Sorry for the delayed response, been a lot going on lately. Sonic KaBoomii As HwAoRrDk confirmed, yes you can. Re: A basic guide for controlling the S1 console display

Glen Mc I don't think I can do anything to enhance the radio itself, that would take a lot (lot) more smarts than I have. But the intention is a cheap open source solution that allows you to do away with the head\radio and keep a\c and display talking; People also then have the option of developing\...
