Re: Track day tyres

Re: pressure, I've run dozens of track days and sprints on either Toyo R888R or Yoko A050s. I tend to set pressures 'cold' at 26psi, then let them rise up to 28 or so.

Re: Recommend me a tow car...

X1 kerb weight looks to be between 1500-1700kg depending on model. Even if you have the heaviest model, an RX8 on a trailer big enough to carry it is going to be at least 1700kg (our track car on an Ifor Williams is just shy of 1800kg loaded, for example). As mentioned above you'd probably be fine, ...

Re: Recommend me a tow car...

Personally, although it may be within spec, I'd want something more substantial than an X1 to tow an RX8 on a trailer.

Re: Recommend me a tow car...

Depends on budget really. I picked up a cheap WJ Grand Cherokee which tows the RX8 nicely. Mate of mine has a 2008 Shogun which I would prefer if I had the budget. OP I notice you're in Surrey - I'd highly recommend this chap when you come to do your trailer test: https://www.mp-dt.co.uk/faq/ No aff...

Re: Track tyres....

Interesting reading. I've been running a set of older R888s and a couple of sets of newer R888Rs recently (as track-day and sprint tyres respectively). The R888Rs are noticeably quicker - 3 seconds around Kendrew, for example - but really don't cope well with heat I've found. Fine for a sprint car,...

Re: Track tyres....

There's quite a mix in the paddock - never used AR-1s myself, but quite a few use them and are impressed.

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Thanks Wayne :)

The Yokos seem to be well reviewed, given the limited amount of information I've found on them. They looked interesting, so I thought I'd take a punt :)

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Blimey, plenty to catch up on! Anglesey, aside from being a real bloody trek from anywhere sensible, is always a great event. Making it a double-header (Javelin and Japanese series) means we could make the most of the weekend, including a nice little AirBNB out in the middle of nowhere to keep costs...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

…and we’re back! It was a pretty quick turnaround from Cadwell, but Pete still managed to fit a new clutch master cylinder and bleed the system through after our worries at the previous round. Fortunately is seems to have done the trick, as neither of us really fancy pulling the gearbox off again. T...

Thank you guys, appreciate the kind words :)

Here's the vid from cadwell. Again, considering how close we are we have pretty different driving styles

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

From European exotica to the cold, damp greyness of the North East – that’s right, sprinting season is back! Pete didn’t even bother unloading the towcar and trailer after Spa – after arriving home on Tuesday afternoon he was heading off again Friday morning. Good thing we didn’t break anything in B...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

It’s safe to say we’re well and truly out of the winter doldrums now – and the Racecat’s last couple of weeks have been pretty hectic! We had a few bits to repair after Brands (not least giving the vomit-stained passenger seat a good clean!) and Pete got stuck in straight away in swapping over the f...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Ok, it’s absolutely about time we had an update here! The RX8 languished on its trailer for several weeks over Christmas before we got our act together and got stuck into the one job we’ve been putting off for some time… changing the clutch. I’d picked up a six-paddle clutch and lightweight flywheel...

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????

Not today, but this weekend just gone:

Replaced clutch and flywheel with 6-paddle clutch and lightweight flywheel/counterweight (that was a fun job....)
Fitted uprated ARBs we've had floating around for months
Booked Brands Hatch on the 15th Feb :D

It's not magnetic. I'm not entirely clear as to which bits are made of what, if you wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction?

This metal shouldn't be here, right?

Long story short - our 231 hasn't moved since a month ago when it was parked up following a track day. Battery was a bit flat and we managed to flood it this morning (oops), and whilst going through the de-flood procedures found this in the front rotor... It's now running, sounds OK but we have a rh...

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Thanks Pete - all minor points are very welcome, I'm under no illusion that either of us are particularly brilliant! I'm constantly at Pete for holding the steering angle too long, and he's constantly at me for being too close to the limit

Your input is, as always, very much appreciated :)

Re: £999 track/sprint project - adventures in the Japanese Sprint Series

Couldn't resist another trackday! We managed to pick up a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3 before heading up to Cadwell Park last weekend, and I'm very glad we did.... it was a tad wet! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4824/32286587398_b2d6c288f4_c.jpg I've never really got my head around Cadwell Park befo...
