Re: Data logger / screen

I think the main barrier is tunnelling through all the proprietary nonsense that the auto industry has created, like playing "guess the PID" and the units and such. FWIW I'm vaguely interested in similar silliness with a Pi, but haven't got enough background at the moment.

Re: Low emission fuel

I mean... carbon emissions go down because there's less energy in the fuel. So you have to buy more. How is this helping?

Also where do the gigaliters of ethanol come from?

Re: RX8 on the Mongol Rally?... (10,000 mile trip to Eastern Siberia)

£2k for the car, £3k for the fuel (at a guess), a good chunk more swapping out to higher profile tyres and more robust suspension, increasing the ride height a bit. I think the most perilous part might be range between fuel stops. You also presumably need to carry spare wheels and the odd jerry can ...

Depending on the route you'll take, you might find winter tyres are a legal requirement (irrespective of having chains). That would definitely be true in Germany, and probably Switzerland.

Unless somebody added one, you won't have an oil temperature sensor. You should be looking at a water temperature in the 80s before gunning it, but the oil does take a while to follow if you have two oil coolers and it's cold. Be sensible and the car won't hate you, and you'll hear it if you overste...

Re: Windscreen Cleaning

Windscreens are typically a glass/polymer laminate, which is why they don't shatter when damaged. I believe the external surface is glass however, so it should resist solvent application. Keep it off the rubber though. It is a dirty world, so you're probably not going to have more than a fleeting ef...

Re: Coil pack testing

Just changed plugs on my GT86, and by Toutatis I would rather change coils and plugs twice as often via the wheel-arch than have to do that again! The coils plug straight through the cam casing, hence the very short "HT lead" is a rubber tube about three inches long. I think they get even less venti...

Wow, the s2 auto must have been a complete sluggard on the highway at 2300rpm. Apart from the heresy and RPM range, you'd do pretty well with a CVT and a rotary. Much more like aircraft operating conditions! There is a utility function whereby the car retains enough torque to handle reasonable highw...

Re: Watch out. The American is confused by European gas, and he has questions...

On the topic of the variable RON, I think it might relate to regulations (or choice) on how much ethanol they can cut into the fuel. Adding ethanol raises the RON. Then there's the differences in calculating RON between US and the UK (if not the rest of Europe?). In the end, V-power nitro + is the a...

Maybe fill the coolant system with deuterium loaded water? The extra density might manage to float the damn thing once and for all. If that fails, move up to sulphuric acid, and lastly mercury. I'm sure the waterpump will be fine.

Re: Hydrogen Powered RX-8

The combustion temperature is poor, due to unburnt fuel and often iffy compression. NOx emissions are all about peak combustion temperature, and a high compression piston engine can make a better burn. The Renesis engine block runs hot because there's a bang on every cycle in the same place, and it ...

Re: Potential new owner

I propose sticking to the 231 for the higher redline. It's not a lot faster than the 192, but especially as a biker you'll enjoy the wider power band and know how to work it. Read the buyer's guide several times. Most cars on the market now are effectively lemons in need of a rebuild, so you can bar...

The readings match the graph spike pattern for the rear rotor, but the front rotor is not recorded matching the pattern. That said, it doesn't look awful. 7 bar dead is probably the lowest of the readings if my guess at the scaling is right. I wouldn't be sad if my car had returned those numbers at ...

When I got the slave back on, I was laying on my back, snaking the tools around the curve of the gearbox. I believe I was able to thread the bolts with fingers, and then ratchet them in with smaller tools. It wasn't much fun, and I sure have gotten a lot of mileage out of a wobbly-headed ratchet. Th...

I've never seen anyone give a compelling justification for why the Renesis is prone to occasional fossil flatulence. My car never did it and I wasn't afraid of topping off the oil, but maybe I was lucky.
